Amos Jr. Johnson

Amos Johnson, Jr. Amos Johnson, Jr., 77, went home to be with the Lord November 4, 2015. He was born in Oakland, Calif. in 1938 and lived in this community over 50 years. He was a professional boxer who beat Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) in the Pan-American games in 1959. He also fought other known fighters throughout his boxing career, Sonny Liston, Henry Cooper, Carl Millenberger and numerous others. He was a marine veteran honorably discharged in 1959. Amos retired from both Babcox and Wilcox and AMHA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Robinson Sr.; the love of his life, wife, Shirley Ann Johnson; brothers, Jimmy Robinson, and Teddy Robinson; sisters, Gail Beard and Carrie (Mickey) Matthews. He is survived by his only son, Amos Johnson III; daughters, Sonya (Dimont) Anderson, Carolyn (Frank) Gladney, and Cynthia Robinson; brothers, Charley (Bettie) Robinson, Dewey (Patricia) Robinson, and Danny Robinson; sisters, Christine Robinson, and Connie (James) Powell; sister-in-law, Glory Jean Addie; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Service will be held Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at 12 p.m. at Stewart and Calhoun Funeral Home, 529 W. Thornton St., Akron, OH 44307, Pastor Dennis Butts Sr. eulogizing. Interment Mt. Peace Cemetery. Friends may visit the chapel from 11 a.m. until time of service. Procession will form and Condolences may be sent to 64 W. Burns Ave., Akron, OH 44310.
