George F.R.Erb, 75, of 204 Noble St., Kutztown, died Tuesday night at 10:19 in Kutztown Manor. Also known as “Red,” he was the husband of Mae E. (Yoder) Erb.
Born in Maxatawny Township, he was the son of Charles and Sarah (Strasser) Erb.
Erb was employed as an electric welder by the Caloric Corp., Topton, from 1935 to 1945. In 1935 he founded Erb Electric, now located in Kutztown, and owned and operated the business for 42 years before retiring in 1981.
He had been an electrician for the Kutztown Folk Festival and Kutztown Fair Association, of which he was a board member and, later, an honorary board member.
He was a sustaining member of the Hawk Mountain Council of Boy Scouts of America, past president of Camp Edmar, near Kutztown, and a former Scout Master in Lyons. He was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award presented by the Scouts for volunteer service.
Erb was also a member of the Berks County Fersolmmling. He received Citizen of the year awards from the Kutztown Jaycees in 1962 and the Kutztown Grange in 1983. He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Kutztown, and served on the church consistory and property committee.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons; George H. C., Morgan Hill, Calif., and Lee, Kutztown; a daughter, Patricia E., wife of Lee F. Leibensperger, Allentown; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Also a sister Ella E. Erb; Kutztown. the Trexler-Ludwick Funeral Home, Kutztown, is in charge of arrangements.
