The Life of Mr. Shirley Lionel Savoy

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 5, 2013 at 12:30 pm in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Shirley Lionel Savoy, 94, who died peacefully at Lafayette General Medical Center, Lafayette, Louisiana on August 1, 2013. He was born 5 April, 1919, in Youngsville, Louisiana. He was a lifelong resident of Lafayette. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Lorraine Miller Savoy, parents Leonce and Laurence Savoy and sisters, Joyce Torok and Bernice Williams and infant daughter Susan. He is survived by his children, Steve A. Savoy and wife Connie of Tomball, Texas; daughter, Julie Ann Savoy and her best friend and pet, Spice, of New Orleans, Louisiana; sister, Mildred Shriver of Columbus, Ohio; stepbrother, Roy Hebert, of Tampa, FL; sister-in-law Annie Miller; nephews, Ron Williams (Judy), Larry Williams (Denise), Ross Shriver (Diane), Alfred Naomi (Joceyn), David Naomi, Charles Alfred Miller, Jim Breaux (Teresa), Larry Tatum (Laurie) and Michael Tatum (Jan); nieces, Pat Torok Arcemont (Mike), Sharon Sweeney (Richard), Sandy Shriver, Deanna Weaver (Harold), Deb Smith, Candy Goldman, Becky McDowel (Rick), Nancy Dean, Laura Bernard (Joe), as well as many good friends and extended family. He served in the U.S. Navy in the World War II Pacific campaign. He joined the Navy in June 1941. He was a member of bomber squadron VPB53 flying PBY-5A Black Cats. He was honorably discharged 24 October 1947. He attended many squadron reunions throughout the years after the war. He participated in the Honor Air program which he was particularly proud. He was a lifelong barber and hairstylist attending New Orleans school of Cosmetology. He worked with his father at Savoy’s Barber Shop on Johnston and Lee Ave. for many years. Later, he owned his own shop on Johnston Street in Lafayette. He worked at Lloyd’s of Lafayette finding a home with good friends to end his career. He attended numerous state and world hairstyling competitions. His profession brought him many lifelong friends who were dearly remembered to the end. He enjoyed golf, starting at an older age so that his children would learn the game. He continued to be an avid player until late in life. He was active in French plays. He was able to use his knowledge of Cajun French adding an authentic touch to his performances. He also gained many good friends through acting. He was proud of his heritage and always tried to promote the Cajun culture. The family deeply appreciates the prayers, support and generosity during Shirley’s lifetime of the following persons: Dr. Milton Jolivette and staff for their loving care; his caregiver, Nelson Bourque, Lloyd Lejeune’s family and staff; Rocky and Brenda Landry and staff; as well as many other concerned friends and family. Visitation will be held at Delhomme Funeral Home of Lafayette on Sunday, August 4, 2013 from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm. Visitation will continue on Monday from 8:00 am until time of services. Msgr. Keith DeRouen, Pastor of Our Lady Queen of Angels in Opelousas, LA, will conduct the funeral services. Burial to follow immediately at Holy Mary Mother of God Cemetery, Johnson Street, Lafayette, Louisiana. Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive, Lafayette, is in charge of funeral arrangements.
