The Life of Doris Caffery

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at 3:00 PM in La Chapelle de Martin & Castille in Lafayette, for Doris Landry Caffery, 92, who passed away peacefully on Friday, June 14, 2013 at her residence in Lafayette. Reverend Kevin Bordelon, Associate Pastor of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette, will conduct the memorial service. Survivors include her four sons, Russell M. Caffery and his wife Susan, Thomas G. Caffery and his wife Kathy, Stephen D. Caffery and his wife Carole and David M. Caffery and his wife Suzie; twelve grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Russell Caffery; one son, Remy L. Caffery; parents, Remy and Elda Buteaud Landry; four brothers; and four sisters. Doris was something of a "renaissance woman" in her time, coming from humble beginnings to achieve a masters degree from LSU in French Studies. Along with her late husband, Russell, she had a deep appreciation of classical music and opera, performing with Chorale Acadiens. Her early experiences included serving as a French and Spanish interpreter screening foreign correspondence for the U.S. Government during WWII. She treasured the memory of her father, naming her second son, Remy, for him. She gave up her cosmopolitan life for many years to raise her five sons, acting as a devoted mother and wife. Her four surviving sons remain close and will miss Doris dearly, remembering her as warm and caring, especially for her grandchildren. She always kept hot meals on the table for her brood and supported them in school and music lessons. In later years, Doris and Russell were able to explore their love of the classics through travel in Europe, especially her beloved France. They also hosted numerous family gatherings in Destin, Florida and earlier in Galveston, Texas, that formed many happy memories. Doris was always the gracious host, giving up her comfort for the sake of her family. She and Russell were renowned for throwing the best party around, with their friends. We will always remember her kind spirit. The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille''s DOWNTOWN Lafayette location on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 from 1:30 PM until time of service. The family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to Sherleen Mouton, Faye Melancon and Jackie Arceneaux for their loving care and years of service.
