The Life of Octave Pierre Montagnet Sr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, March 25, 2013 at 12:00 pm at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church for Mr. Octave Pierre "Monty" Montagnet, Sr. who passed away peacefully at his home Friday morning at the age of 90. Reverend Keith LaBove, Pastor of St. Patrick Catholic Church, will be Celebrant of the Mass and conduct the funeral services. Interment will take place in Lafayette Memorial Park Mausoleum. Monty was born in New Orleans, LA and had been a resident of Acadiana since 1947. He was the youngest of five children born of the late Eugene H. and Sophie Fortier Montagnet of New Orleans, LA. As a native of New Orleans, he was a graduate of St. Aloysius High School; he then served as an aviation cadet in the United States Navy until 1944. Following his service to his country, he attended Loyola University in New Orleans where he earned degrees in Physics and Mathematics and met his wife of 66 years Marguerite Hitter Montagnet of New Iberia, LA. Monty was a positive influence in the lives of many and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was considered a mentor by family, friends and acquaintances. He once stated "If you do something and give all of yourself to what you''re doing, with a little bit of luck and timing, things fall into place." This quote sums up his devotion and approach to his family, his faith and life in general. Monty was a devout Catholic and member of St. Patrick''s Church where he served many years as a lector. When he wasn''t spending time with family, he always enjoyed a peaceful round of golf at Acadian Hills Country Club where he was a member since the club was founded in 1965. In 1969, he founded Aluminum & Stainless, Inc. which was a perennial top 100 Acadiana company servicing the Gulf South with materials for various marine and energy related industries. Prior to starting his career in the metals business with Standard Brass & Manufacturing, he was a school teacher in Port Arthur and managed a cannery plant in Patoutville, LA. He also assisted veterans returning from World War II by moonlighting as a math teacher while living in New Iberia, LA. After successfully leading his company through the ups and downs of Lafayette''s economy for over 34 years, Monty sold Aluminum & Stainless to Reliance Steel and Aluminum. He is survived by his wife Marguerite and their five children that include his daughters Renee M. Domingue and her husband RJ Domingue, Eugenie M. Betzer and her husband Ron Betzer, Michelle M. Foreman, Stephanie Montagnet, his son Andre Montagnet and his wife Ellen and daughter-in-law Laurel Lequeux Montagnet. He is also loved and remembered by his eight grandchildren: Michael Domingue, Adrienne Domingue Uffman, Brent Domingue, John Foreman, III, Andrew Foreman, Leigh Montagnet McIntyre, Angie Montagnet Barrilleaux and Emily Montagnet and seventeen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Sophie Montagnet, his brothers Eugene and Albert Montagnet, his sisters Sophie Deforges, Yvonne Bachus and his son Octave Pierre Montagnet, Jr. The family requests that visiting hours be held Sunday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm and continue Monday from 9:00 am to time of services. A Rosary will be recited Sunday evening at 7:00 pm in the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Michael Domingue, Brent Domingue, John Foreman, Andrew Foreman, Michael Uffman, Marc McIntyre and Greg Barrilleaux. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston Street, Ste. 200, Lafayette, LA 70503 Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive, is in charge of all funeral arrangements.
