The Life of John Allen Couvillon

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 16, 2012 at an 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial in Martin & Castille's La Fleur de Lis Chapel in Lafayette, for John Allen Couvillon, age 92, who died on Sunday, August 12, 2012 at Lafayette General Medical Center. Interment will be in Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery. Reverend Steve LeBlanc, Pastor of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Lafayette, will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Giftbearers will be Shelby Riedel and Sarah Couvillon. Survivors include five children, Angela Couvillon, Marlene Couvillon, Billy Couvillon and his wife, Mary Lynn, all of Lafayette, Jim Couvillon and his wife, Patty of Alvin, Texas and Edie Couvillon Riedel of Broussard; nine grandchildren, Sarah Couvillon, Sam Couvillon, Ben Couvillon, Danielle Fontenot, Ashley Prejean, Cassidy Allison, Garrett Langford, Shelby Riedel, and Josh Riedel; seven great grandchildren; and a beloved niece, Christina Allen and her husband, Mark and sons, Stevie and Andrew. He was preceded in death by his wife, Adele DesOrmeaux Couvillon; parents, Albin Bernard Couvillon and the former, Elnora Dora Mattason, both natives of Moreauville, Louisiana; a brother, Louis Couvillon and two sisters, Evelyn C. O'Neal and Agnes C. LeBlanc. John was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on January 22, 1920 and resided there until 1942. In 1942, he graduated from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Petroleum Engineering and went to work for Stanolind (Standard Oil of Indiana, now AMOCO). In 1942, he began serving in the United States Army, during World War II, having served in the AMERICAL Division in the Pacific. Mr. Couvillon served on several islands, namely New Caledonia, Fiji, and Bougainville and in the Philippine Islands, Leyte, Samar and Cebu. The AMERICAL Division was on Cebu Island, preparing for the invasion of Japan when the armistice was declared. The division was assigned to Japan for several months before he was discharged in November, 1945. On December 5, 1947, he married Adele DesOrmeaux from Hackberry, LA and was married for sixty three years and had five children. John worked in the oil industry for several companies, Amoco, Falcon Seaboard Drilling Company, Oleum, Inc. and as a Registered Petroleum Engineer with D-O-R Engineering until his retirement in 1990. For over fifteen years after retirement, he did volunteer work for many non-profit organizations in the Lafayette area. Pallbearers will be Billy Couvillon, Jim Couvillon, Sam Couvillon, Ben Couvillon, Rob Riedel and Josh Riedel. The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille's SOUTHSIDE location on Wednesday from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM and on Thursday from 8:00 AM until time of service.
