The Life of Maurice Weldon Smith

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at a 2:00 PM Service in Martin & Castille's La Fleur de Lis Chapel in Lafayette, for M. W. "Cotton" Smith, age 77, who died on Sunday, July 8, 2012 at Cornerstone Village South in Lafayette, Louisiana. Interment will be in Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetary. Reverend Weldon Moak, Pastor of First Baptist Church in Broussard will conduct the funeral services. Karen Broussard, organist, will sing for the services, "The Rose" "In The Arms Of An Angel" and "The Wind Beneath My Wings"."Amazing Grace" will be sung by his granddaughter, Elizabeth Smith. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Bonnie Smith; one daughter, Kathy Smith; one son, Mike Smith and his wife, Lillian; a special friend, Mary Strauss; four grandchildren, Michelle Smith Linch, Nathan Smith and his wife Marina, Micha Smith and Elizabeth Smith; four great grandchildren, Alyssa Brooke Linch, Cassidy Maree Linch, Eric Shawn Linch and Ridge Asher Smith; one great great grandchild, Cayden Allen Linch; two sisters, Evelyn Day and Eliose Davis and her husband Bill and one brother, Alvin Darrel Smith and his wife, Bonnie. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Alvin Smith and the former, Ruby Ethel Kelly; one brother, Bud Smith, a grandson-in-law, Shawn Linch and two nephews, Dennis and David Smith. Born on Sunday, October 21, 1934 in Castor, Louisiana, M.W. "Cotton" Smith was a resident of Lafayette for most of his life. Prior to his retirement, he was employed with Grey Wolf Drilling Company for 31 years. "Cotton" Smith was the co-owner of Jewel Specialty & Supply with his daughter, Kathy Smith. He was a past member of M.E. Girard Lodge #450 and Hope Lodge 145. Mr. Smith was an avid fisherman and an avid fan of all sports, boxing and football. Mr. Smith was also the owner and breeder of thoroughbred Race Horses. Pallbearers will be Moxey Bordelon, Eric Linch, Richard Arceneaux, Richard LeBlanc, Nick Doucet and Terry LeBlanc. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Staff of Jewel Specialty & Supply Company. The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille's SOUTHSIDE location on Wednesday from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Thursday from 11:00 AM until time of service. The family would like to extend their special thanks to Lillian Smith, Mary Strauss and Ilene Bordelon for all the care and support given to the family at their time of need.
