The Life of Herbert Thompson

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2008 at a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial in St. Pius X Church in Lafayette, for Herbert Thompson, 87, who passed away peacefully on Monday, February 11, 2008 at Lafayette General Medical Center in Lafayette.Interment will be in Lafayette Memorial Park.Reverend Monsignor J. Douglas Courville, JCL, Pastor of St. Jules Church in Lafayette, will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services.  Karen Broussard, organist and soloist, will sing "Ave Maria", "On Eagle''s Wings", "Yahweh You Are Near" and "Here I Am Lord" for the services.  Larry Bossier, bagpiper, will also play for the services.Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Arwood and her husband Roy of Lafayette;  two sons, Michael W. Thompson and his wife Sophie of Youngsville and Manuel V. Calamia, Jr. of Lafayette;  four grandchildren, Evan Thompson, Arianne Michele Ferguson-Efird and her husband Tom, Monica Calamia-Roger and her husband Stonie, and Manuel Victor Calamia, III;  and one great grandchild, Tyler Albarado.He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lucille Rumfello Calamia Thompson;  one brother, Clifford Thompson;  and his parents, L.O. and Armide Fontenot Thompson.A native of Ville Platte and a resident of Lafayette for most of his life, Herbert Thompson graduated from SLI (now ULL) in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science and received his Masters from LSU in 1953 with a degree in Agriculture.  He was instrumental in starting the 4-H Club in Lafayette and was Associate County Agent for more than 30 years in Lafayette.  After retirement, Herbert Thompson was a consultant for the Diocese of Lafayette and taught at the Green House and ULL (Agriculture & Horticulture).  Herbert Thompson proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy in World War II.  He was a loving father, grandfather and friend to all who knew him and will be dearly missed.A Rosary will be prayed Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 7:00 PM in Martin & Castille Funeral Home. The family requests that visitation be observed on Wednesday from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM and on Thursday from 8:00 AM until time of service.  Martin & Castille-Lafayette, 234-2311
