The Life of Velta Marie DesOrmeaux

Funeral services will be Monday, September 5, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the Duhon Funeral Home in Rayne for Velta Marie “Vel” Gaspard DesOrmeaux, 81, who entered eternal rest Saturday, September 3, 2011 at 4:20 AM. She will be laid to rest at Lafayette Memorial Park; entombment will be in Peace Chapel Mausoleum, on Tuesday, September 6, 2010 at 10:00 AM. Pastor Jeff Ables of Crossroads Church will conduct the services. Vel, was born in Vermilion on June 27, 1930, the eldest of six children, she was brought up on a farm. Her parents as well as herself and her siblings worked extremely hard in the fields of Acadia Parish. Her father was a strict disciplinarian which instilled a strong work ethic in each one of them. It was a well known fact throughout the “Morse ~Lyons Point” community that no family ever endured so much and worked harder than the “Gaspard Children” alongside their beloved mother who worked just as diligently during the depression era. In August 1948, Vel married William Sam “Bill” Cormier. In November of 1949, they had one child from this marriage, a daughter; which Bill named after Vel. Mrs. DesOrmeaux was a native of Crowley, La. and had been a resident of Lafayette for fifty years. She was an avid gardener, nurturing seedlings of trees from generations ago. She was a great cook and loved baking her “speciality” homemade cakes for family and friends. She enjoyed sewing and embroidery also. She was a member of the Acadiana Ceramic Club for several years. She loved animals; her most memorable dogs were: “Garcon”, “Moi Cher’e” and “Taco”. Her cockatiel “Kook” provided hours of joy daily. She was a supporter of several animal rescue organizations. She is survived by her daughter, Velta Marie (“Tee Be’y”) Cormier-Courville and husband, Joseph Harold (“H”) Courville of Lafayette, La.; one brother and godchild, Orlie Paul Gaspard and wife Lou Abshire Gaspard of Morse, La.; one sister, Verdie Marie Gaspard of Sulphur, La. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Joseph DesOrmeaux (May 27, 1996); Her parents, Ophy Gaspard and Ella Heddy Mire Gaspard; two brothers, Arlie Paul Gaspard (“Lil Nome”) and Velton J. (“Bod”) Gaspard and one sister, Annie Mae Gaspard Regan. For her services, Mariana King and L. C. Melchoir will deliver the eulogy. The readers will be Bailey Marie Abshire, (Vel’s 7 year old great niece), will recite, Psalm 34.8-13; Music will be provided by Melinda Regan Abshire (Vel’s niece) and she will sing “He’s All You Need”, Bella “Sissy” Myers ( Also Vel’s niece) will sing “Come Morning”, Amber Daspit will sing “Amazing Grace” and Greg Martinez will sing “You Keep Sending Me Angels (From Up on High) and “ A Change Is Gonna Come” Pallbearers for her services will be Bob Gamache, Jaried E. Horn, Josh Louviere, Gerald “Jerry” Newgebaver, Larry Louviere and Randy W. Simon; Honorary Pallbearers, (Ladies), Gayle Credeur DesOrmeaux, Bobbie King Gamache and Wanda Denais (“Wanda Woman”) Lormand; and Honorary Pallbearers, (Men), Wade J. Abshire, Joe Marks, William McCullough and Albert (“A-Bryan”) Spallino. The family wishes to thank her physician, Dr. David Booher for being such a compassionate and wonderful doctor during the past eight years. The family also wishes to thank the staff of Hospice of Acadiana. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Duhon Funeral Home of Rayne on Sunday, September 4, 2011 at 11:00 AM till time of services. Duhon Funeral Home, L.L.C. of Rayne will be in charge of the arrangements.
