The Life of Clarence Hebert Jr.

Funeral services will be held at a 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Clarence Hebert, Jr., 74, who passed away on Friday, May 30, 2008 at Maison de Lafayette Nursing Home.

Reverend Gary Schexnayder, Pastor of St. Michael Catholic Church in Crowley, will be Celebrant of the Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Dr. Perry Sanders, Pastor Emeritus of First Baptist Church of Lafayette, will also officiate.

Interment will take place in Lafayette Memorial Park.

Mr. Hebert, a native of Lafayette, was the son of the late Clarence Hebert, Sr. and the former Felicia Whittington, both of Judice. He was a Veteran of the United States Air Force, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force Reserve in 1980. During his military career, he was the Adjutant Supply Officer and acting Squadron Commander for Headquarters Squadron at Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico. He was assigned by the General as Commandant and Director of Training at Non-Commissioned Officer''s Preparatory School at Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico from 1956 until 1959.
Clarence was a 1951 graduate of Lafayette High School. In 1956, he received a Bachelor''s Degree in Music Education from S.L.I. In 1963, he received a Master''s Degree in Education from USL. In 1973, he received an Educational Specialist, Administration and Supervision Degree from USL.

Mr. Hebert was an educator and administrator in area schools for over 30 years prior to his retirement in 1987. From 1955 until 1956, Mr. Hebert was the Band Director at Cathedral High School. From 1956 until 1966, he was the Music Director at Breaux Bridge High School. From 1966 until 1976, he was the Band Director at Comeaux High School. From 1976 until 1979, he was the Band Director at Acadiana High School. From 1980 until 1982, he was the Band Director at L.J. Alleman. From 1982 until 1987, he was the Assistant Principal at Scott Middle School.

During his tenure as Band Director at area schools, Mr. Hebert''s band won numerous awards and honors. Among other honors, Mr. Hebert''s bands performed at the inauguration of President Carter in 1977 and won numerous local, regional and national band competitions. Clarence himself continued to play music for over 40 years with his dear friends in the Harry Greig Orchestra.

Mr. Hebert was district director, District III of the Louisiana Education Association Board of Directors (LMEA) for 12 years, past president of Southwest Louisiana Band Directors Association, past president of Lafayette Parish Instrumental Teachers Association, and past state band division chairman of the Louisiana Music Educators Association.

In his second career, Clarence was a successful Realtor from 1979 until his retirement in 2005. He was Realtor of the Year in 1999. He was a member of National Association of Realtors, Louisiana Realtors Association, Lafayette Board of Realtors Louisiana/Mississippi CCIM Chapter CID, Kiwanis Club of Lafayette, Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, Lafayette American Diabetes Association, The Retired Officers Association, AARP, Louisiana Retired Teachers Association, Lafayette Parish Retired Teachers, USL Alumni Band, USL Quarterback Club, Phi Mu Alpha, and Phi Delta Kappa.

While he was a member of the Lafayette Board of Realtors, he was the on the L.B.R. Board of Directors, the Budget and Finance Committee, the L.B.A. Board of Directors, and was MLS Chairman for 1998.

Survivors include two sons, Michael D. Hebert and his wife, Lisha B. of Lafayette, and David J. Hebert and his wife, Monique A. of Mandeville; six grandchildren, Thomas Hebert, Matthew Hebert, Daryan Carriere, Blaire Carriere, Katherine Hebert, and Caroline Hebert; and one sister, Shirley A. McCauley of Lafayette.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed on Monday from 2:00 pm until 9:00 pm and continue on Tuesday from 8:00 am until the time of service.

A rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM on Monday in the funeral home.

Pallbearers are Buddy LeBlanc, Darrell Comb, Alan Albarado, Ricky Baker, Chuck Clark, Jeff Lenox.

Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive, is in charge of all funeral arrangements.
