The Life of George Lawhon Crain Sr.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, October 27, 2007 at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension for George Lawhon Crain, Sr., who passed away Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at home following a lengthy illness. Reverend Duane E. Petersen, Associate Rector of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension will officiate at the funeral services. Interment will take place in Lafayette Memorial Park in Lafayette. Mr. Crain, the son of the late Dr. Alfred Penn Crain and the former Annie Laurie Lawhon Crain of Shreveport was born on May 14, 1921. Mr. Crain was educated at Centenary College in Shreveport and was a graduate of Tulane University in Chemical Engineering. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Order. He served as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy during World War II. He was employed by Interstate Oil Pipeline which prompted Mr. Crain to leave his North Louisiana roots and relocate to Lafayette. Mr. Crain was a founder and past President of WHC, Inc. He served on the Boards of Directors for the Louisiana State Licensing Board of Contractors, the Public Affairs Research Council, the Musket Club, the Krewe of Gabriel and Lafayette Town House. He established a family tradition of involvement in Mardi Gras with membership in the Krewe of Gabriel, the Musket Club and the Order of Troubadours which he served as King Richard Coeur de Lion XXI. He will be remembered for his love of hunting and fishing, and most of all, his love of his family and friends. Survivors include his devoted wife, Azalie Webb Crain; daughter, Azalie Crain Holland of Houston, TX; son, George Lawhon Crain, Jr. of LeBlanc and wife, Merilyn; two grandchildren, Carolyn Crain Broussard of Youngsville and husband, Mark, and John Creighton Crain of Lafayette; two step-grandchildren, Allison Istre Lagasse of Lafayette, and husband, Manard, and Stephen Scott Istre of Portland Oregon; one great grandchild, Matthew; and one step-great grandchild, Camille Elizabeth Lagasse. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dr. Ashton Penn Crain; and sister, Mary Virginia Crain Penniman. The family wishes to thank all of those who diligently cared for Mr. Crain during the last several years of his life. Visiting hours will be observed on Friday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Delhomme Bertrand Funeral Home and services will follow Saturday, October 27 at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Lafayette. Pallbearers will be John Creighton Crain, Mark Broussard, Manard Lagasse, Creighton Webb, Allen Penniman, Vernon Coffman, Dr. Stephen Abshire, and Larry Holland.
