The Life of Lois "Peggy" Jean Garrison

LAFAYETTE, LA - Funeral services will be conducted for Mrs. Lois Jean "Peggy" Potter Garrison, 78, on Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at David Funeral Home in Lafayette, LA. Visitation will be held Wednesday January 7, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.. Reverend Wallace Millsaps of First Baptist Church of Jeanerette will officiate. Interment will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park. A native of Hutchinson, Kansas and long-time resident of Picayune MS and Lafayette LA, Mrs. Garrison died peacefully at home on Saturday, January 3, 2009. Mrs. Garrison was born August 3, 1930 in Rolla, Ks. She graduated from Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. After college, she moved to Los Angeles, CA to work for Pacific Bell Telephone, first as an operator and later as a hiring supervisor. While in California, she met and married Dwight W. Garrison. The couple moved to Picayune, MS in 1965, where they built a life, with their four children, for 25 years. "Peggy" was active in the Presbyterian Church, Scouts, PTA and D.A.R. She taught Vacation Bible School, served as "room mom", den mother and held various local and state offices with the Daughters of American Revolution. She also wrote a column in the Picayune Item newspaper. In the late 1970''s and early 80''s, Peggy worked at the Stennis Space Center, formerly the National Space Technologies Laboratories (NSTL), in Bay St. Louis, MS serving as an executive secretary for the US Navy-Navoceano. After the family''s move to Lafayette, LA, she worked as payroll manager for Aztec Pipe and Wellheads (Newpark). In the 1990''s, Mrs. Garrison worked for the Social Security Administration and later the Lafayette Area Council on Aging. She also served as Lafayette Parish Election Commissioner and as volunteer at SW Medical Center Hospital. Her last position held, and the one she treasured most, was that of primary babysitter to her granddaughters. She was a member of Asbury Methodist Church in Lafayette but considered herself blessed by many cards, visits and prayers from friends at First Baptist Church Broussard and Christian Center Church, as well. Special thanks to Our Lady of Lourdes staff, Chaplain Walt Dunbar, Rev.Wallace and Judy Millsaps, and Hospice of Acadiana organization, specifically, Rev Noah Langley, and nurses Jennifer, Carrie and Rose. She is survived by her children, son Matthew Garrison, of Lafayette, LA, daughter Crystal Garrison Wilson and husband, Galen Wilson, of Lafayette, LA, daughter Lynn Garrison Nichols, and husband, Larry Nichols, of Ft. Worth, TX, and son David Garrison of Lafayette, LA. She is survived by three granddaughters, Abbigail Wilson and Kendra Wilson of Lafayette, LA and Gracie Nichols of Ft. Worth, TX. She is survived by her brothers, Louis Potter and Herbert Potter, both of Hutchinson, KS, as well as two brother-in- laws, R. Wayne Garrison, and wife, Phyllis, of Omaha, NE and Donald Garrison, and wife, Jean, of Lincoln, NE. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grandnephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight Wesley Garrison, her parents, Clarence and Cleo Potter of Hutchinson, KS, her sister, Ruth Singletary of Hutchinson KS, her brother Harold Potter of Hot Springs Village, AR, and her brother, Floyd Potter of Hutchinson, KS. Pallbearers will be Larry Nichols, Galen Wilson, Kerry Bertsch, Gary Gray, Al Gschnell. Honorary pallbearers will be Jason Moss and Tim Goynes. The family requests that donations be made to National Parkinson Foundation Inc. (1501 NW Stn Avenue, Miami FL 33136-1494) or Hospice of Acadiana (2600 Johnston Street Suite 200, Lafayette, LA 70503) in lieu of flowers.
