The Life of Barbara Jean Smith

Barbara Jean Smith died on July 14, 2009. The Memorial Service led by the Reverend Ann Sutton and Dr. Lee Cooke will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at Delhomme Funeral Home on Bertrand Drive in Lafayette at 10:00 am.

Jean was born on November 6, 1927 in Jennings, Louisiana, and grew up in Lake Charles. She graduated from SLI (UL) and married Norman E. Smith on August 31, 1953. She had been a resident of Lafayette since 1962.

Jean is preseeded in death by her parents, Johnson and Mable Sutton, and her husband, Norman.

She is survived by her brother James "Dick" Sutton of Kenner, Louisiana, one daughter, Vicki A. Smith of Lafayette, Louisiana; one son, Charles J. Smith of Malden, Missouri; her grandson, Jason W. Smith, a great-grandson, Alex N. Smith, and her cousin Lynnel Doens.

Jean was a first grade teacher, having taught in Lake Charles and Houston. She was a long-time member of Asbury United Methodist Church where she sang in the Asbury Choir. Jean "the General" liked to travel, read and work with her hands as a gardener, artist and crafter. She and Norman were avid supporters of UL basketball and football.

Pallbearers will be Charles Smith, Jason Smith, Gary Sutton, Rick Richardson, "Skip" Sutter, and Robert Finch. Honorary pallbearers include: Dick Sutton, Larry Dean Smith, Lee Anthony, Jeff Anthony, Andy Abshier, Brian Abshier, Bill Welp, Robert Sutter, Ed Abel, and Elliot Bessard.

Visitation will be Friday, July 17, 2009 from 4-6 pm, at Delhomme Funeral Home and will also occur before the Memorial Service on Saturday. Interment will be at Lafayette Memorial Park following the Service.
