The Life of Mervin Paul Hebert

Funeral services will be held at a 1:00 pm Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, December 15, 2007 in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Mervin Paul Hebert, 75, who died Thursday, December 13, 2007 at his residence.

Rev. John DeLeeuw will be Celebrant of the Mass and conduct the funeral services. Karen Broussard will provide musical selections.

Interment will take place in Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Hebert, the son of the late Thomas X. Hebert and the former Hazel Braud, was born in Thibodeaux, LA on April 14, 1932. In 1936, he moved to Lafayette and attended Central Grammar School and graduated from Lafayette High School in 1950. He enlisted in the United States Air Force serving during the Korean Conflict. While in the Air Force, he was an intercept radio operator in the security services. Upon leaving the Air Force, he attended SLI, graduating with a math-science degree from USL. He taught high school, vocational technical school and was an instructor at LSU-Baton Rouge while studying for an advanced degree in Nuclear Engineering.

He then left academia to pursue a career in the oilfield as a construction consultant retiring in 2005. He fought a long and courageous battle with myelodysplastic syndrome, which progressed to acute myeloid leukemia. He bravely underwent many various treatments in hopes of possibly finding a cure for his cancer.

He enjoyed his family, fishing, gardening and barbequing. Mervin will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all those whose lives he has touched in one way or another through the years.

Survivors include his wife Jean Hebert of Carencro (whom he married in 1998); daughters, Karen M. Hebert of Lafayette, Paula A. Winkers and husband, Michael of Dunkerton, Iowa; sons, Thomas X. Hebert and wife Diana of Breaux Bridge, Paul E. Hebert and wife Kim of Lafayette, Steven D. Hebert and wife Angela of Bentonville, AR, step-daughter Yvette M. Taff and husband Wes of Jacksonville, FL, and a step-son, John A. Strawn of Ormand Beach, FL; fifteen grandchildren, one great grandchild; sisters, Mildred Broussard of Lafayette, Nell Pierce of Orlando, FL; brothers, Sidney Robert Hebert of Lafayette, and Curtis Peter Hebert of Carencro.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Emily Hebert; a son, Richard A. Hebert; a sister, Ethel Dennis; and two brothers, Owen L. Hebert and Roy C. Hebert.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed Friday from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm and continue Saturday from 8:00 am to time of services.

A rosary will be recited Friday evening at 7:00 pm in the funeral home.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of LA Oncology Associates, Dr. Eugene Brierre and Eric Buller, staff of 8th floor Oncology at Lafayette General Medical Center, Hospice of Acadiana and the Infusion Coumadin Center of LGMC.

Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive, is in charge of all arrangements.
