The Life of Joseph James Piccione

Funeral services will be held at a 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, December 1, 2007 at the Cathedral of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lafayette for Joseph James Piccione, 91, who passed away Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at Lafayette General Hospital.

Reverend Keith J. DeRouen, Pastor of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church will be Celebrant of the Mass and conduct the funeral services. Lectors will be JoAnna Hurley, and Beth Baugh. Gift Bearers will be Marie Piccione, Francesca Piccione, Janie LeBlanc, Natalie Piccione, and Ginger Baugh.

Entombment will take place in the Lafayette Memorial Park Mausoleum, 2111 West Pinhook, Lafayette.

Mr. Piccione, the son of the late Salvatore Piccione of Poggioreale, Sicily and the former Mary Marie Mangiopane of Santa Ninfa, Sicily, was a native and resident of Lafayette. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1944 as Captain after having served in the European Theater in WWII in the 65th and 9th Divisions Third Army under General George Patton. He participated in the capture of enemy forces during the War and the Liberation of Concentration Camps in Germany. He served as Judge Advocate General in Post War Germany.

He graduated from USL in 1938 and Tulane Law School in 1940. He was Editor in Chief of The Law Review, a member of the Order of the Coif, and Moot Court Champion. He practiced law in Lafayette for 60 years. Mr. Piccione was President of the Lafayette Parish Bar Association; past President of the Kiwanis Club of Lafayette, being a member for 61 years; received Kiwanian of the Year in 1973; and was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1992.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Wilma K. Piccione of Lafayette; four daughters, Nita Piccione and partner Debbie Simon, Joanna Piccione Hurley and husband Michael, Beth Piccione Baugh and husband Jim, and Cherrie Piccione LeBlanc and husband Brad; and one son, Kirk Piccione and wife Brenda, all of Lafayette; eight grandchildren, Ginger Baugh, Jared LeBlanc, Jason LeBlanc, Janie LeBlanc, Joe Piccione, II, Marie Piccione, Francesca Piccione, and Natalie Piccione; one sister, Theresa Piccione of Lafayette; three brothers, Frank Piccione of Youngsville, Phil Piccione of San Antonio, TX, and Peter Piccione, Sr. of Lafayette.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Rose Goff; three brothers, Sam Piccione, Jr., Vincent Piccione, and Anthony Piccione.

The family requests visiting hours be observed on Friday from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm and on Saturday from 8:00 am to service time.

A rosary will be recited Friday at 6:00 pm in the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Jason LeBlanc, Joe Piccione, II, Brad LeBlanc, Jim Baugh, Peter Piccione, Jr. and Michael Piccione.

Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Piccione, Phil Piccione, Peter Piccione, Sr., and Jared LeBlanc.
