The Life of Barbara Nelson
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, December 17, 2010, in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Barbara F. Nelson who died on Dec. 13, 2010, in Collinsville, AL.
Reverend John Wamsley, Pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church, will conduct the funeral services.
Interment will be held at Lafayette Memorial Park.
The daughter of Leah and James Furnas, she was born Sept. 21, 1913 in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Reared in Wichita, Kansas, she was a graduate of Friends University. Prior to her marriage she was a secretary with Cessna Aviation and an All-American basketball player. She was married to Ira S. Nelson and was the mother of four children, six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
A longtime resident of Lafayette, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, active in Girl Scouting, the Lafayette Woman''s Club, and was retired from the ULL College of Agriculture''s Horticulture Department as a librarian and an instructor. She had a wide range of gardening interests and served as the president of the Lafayette Garden Club, The Society for Louisiana Iris and The Louisiana Society for Horticultural Research.
She is survived by her children, Martha Wood, Leah Moffatt, Catherine Nelson, and James Thomas Nelson; grandchildren, Ann Wood Tanner, Peter Wood Jr., David Moffatt, Barbara Moffatt Kunz, Christine Moffatt Munday, and Alice Moffatt; great-grandchildren Erica Tanner, Christopher Tanner, Gabrielle Tanner, Peter Wood III, Foster Wood, Andrew Moffatt, Michael Moffatt, Bryson Moffatt, Charles Kunz and Tyler Kunz.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a sister, Ruth Vile.
The family request that visitation will be held at Delhomme Funeral Home of Lafayette on Thursday from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm and on Friday from 8:00 am until the time of service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ira Nelson Horticultural Endowment Fund at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
