The Life of Ruth Szabo

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at First Baptist Church, Lafayette for Ruth Szabo who passed away on March 28, 2011 at 4:45 p.m. at Somerfield Health Center, Brentwood, Tennessee. Visitation will be at Delhomme Funeral Home, Friday, April 1, 2011 from 6:30 - 9 p.m. and on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at First Baptist Church from 1:30 until the time of service.

Dr. Steve Horn, First Baptist Church will conduct the funeral services.

Burial will take place in Lafayette Memorial Park immediately after the funeral services.

Ruth Szabo was born December 29, 1922 in Lillie, Louisiana, the fifth and last child of Charles and Nancy Goss. She graduated from Bernice High School, Bernice, Louisiana in 1939, then attended Northeast Junior College from 1939 '' 1941 and LSU from 1941-1943, when she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education. She taught music in the Winnsboro School District from 1943 '' 1945, when she married her college sweetheart, A. J. Szabo. They lived in Monroe, Louisiana and Cambridge, Massachusetts before settling in Lafayette, Louisiana in 1951, when her husband became a Professor of Civil Engineering at Southwest Louisiana Institute (SLI), now University of Louisiana, Lafayette. She was a resident of Lafayette until 2007, when she and her husband moved to a retirement community in Brentwood, TN to be near their son, John, and his family.
Ruth, known as ''Me-Ma'' to her grandchildren, is survived by her husband, A.J. Szabo of Brentwood, TN and her sons Robert G. Szabo and his wife Ann of Washington, D.C. and John F. Szabo and his wife Mary Ann of Franklin, TN. She is preceded in death by her beloved and sorely missed daughter, Rebecca Ruth Szabo.

She is survived by seven grandchildren, Robert C. Szabo and his wife Marie of Silver Springs, MD, David A. Szabo of San Diego, CA, Bryan P. Szabo of Washington, D.C. and J. Michael Szabo and his wife Elizabeth of San Diego, CA, Justin Szabo of Sommes Bar, CA, and Amanda Szabo of Greensboro, NC. She has one great-grandchild, Wyatt Coulter Szabo of Washington, D.C.
Ruth was an active member of First Baptist Church, Lafayette where she was a member of the church choir and handbell choir, served as Interim Choir Director and Interim Minister of Music and was director of Children and Youth Choirs. She was also a member of the Women''s Missionary Union (WMU). She was a member of the Community Concert Series Committee and Acadiana Chorus. She taught piano for several years.

Memorial contributions can be made in the name of Ruth Szabo to the ministries of First Baptist Church, 1100 Lee Avenue, Lafayette, LA 70501.

Pallbearers will be the Thursday Morning Men''s Prayer Group, First Baptist Church, Lafayette.

Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive, is in charge of all funeral arrangements.
