The Life of Lyle Kenneth Mellington

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at Covenant United Methodist Church, 300 E. Martial Ave., Lafayette, La. 70508 for Lyle Kenneth Mellington, 85, who passed away on September 27, 2010 at 5:43 AM at Lafayette General Medical Center. Reverend Chris Blanchard, Pastor of Covenant United Methodist Church, will conduct the funeral services. Interment will take place in Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Mellington, a resident of Lafayette, LA, was the son of the late George Irvin Mellington of Sedan, Kansas and the former Maggie Hoffman of Sedan, Kansas. He entered the United States Navy on March 1, 1944 and served on the USS LCI 612 as part of the LCI Flotilla. He served for 2 years as a radio operator. He obtained the Victory Medal, the Philippine Liberation Star and 2 Asiatic Pacific Stars. He was proud to have been a part of the first Honor Air flight to Washington D.C. to tour the World War II Memorial. He accompanied two of his good friends Harry McCauley and Pete Loftin. He also enjoyed his early morning coffee with his friends at Mel's Diner. He is survived by his wife Daisy Smith Mellington of Lafayette; two sons, Brett Mellington and his wife, Donna of Lafayette and Craig Mellington and his wife, Terry of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren, Ian, Eric and Ande Mellington all of Lafayette and three great grandchildren, Andrew, Morgan and Emily. He was preceded in death by his Parents; two sisters, Eloise Duke, and Velma Roberts; two brothers, Albert Mellington, and Dale Mellington. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home of Lafayette on Tuesday, from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM and will continue on Wednesday at Covenant United Methodist Church, 300 E. Martial Ave., Lafayette, La. from 12:00 PM until service time. The family suggest that memorial contributions be made to Covenant United Methodist Church, 300 E. Martial Ave., Lafayette, La. 70508 Pallbearers will be Ian Mellington, Eric Mellington, Ande Mellington, Dr. Tracy Richardson, Jack Hudson and Wayne Atkinson. Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive, Lafayette, is in charge of all funeral arrangements.
