The Life of Lula Mae Bernard

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at a 9:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial in La Chapelle de Martin & Castille for Lula Mae "Jose" Bernard, 90, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 30, 2008 at Evangeline Oaks Guest House in Carencro.Interment will be in Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery.Reverend Monsignor Charles Mallet will be the Celebrant of the funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Lector will be Katherine Carpenter. Giftbearers will be Steven and Sarah Carpenter. Valerie Andrus, organist and soloist, will sing for the services, "Be Not Afraid", "Amazing Grace", "The Old Rugged Cross", "Ave Maria", and "One Bread, One Body".Survivors include two sisters, Ann Mashaw and her husband, Herb and Florence Guilbeau all of Lafayette; two brothers, Roy Bernard of Lafayette and Russell Bernard and his wife, Mary of Hanceville, Alabama; and several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonce Bernard and Ella LeBlanc Bernard; three brothers, L.C. Bernard, Howard Bernard and Elmo Bernard; and four sisters, Joyce B. Carpenter, Odette B. Harrison, Thelma B. Comeaux and Inez Bernard.Lula Mae Bernard was born on July 26, 1917 in Broussard, Louisiana and was a resident of Lafayette for most of her life. Ms. Bernard was a loving sister, aunt and friend to all who knew her. She was never married, but was a mother to her siblings after their mother's death. Ms. Bernard had a great love for children, and flower gardening. She was a member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church Community. Ms. Bernard enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.Pallbearers will be Roy Bernard, Alan Carpenter, Bobby Carpenter, Alvin Sonnier, David Barnett, and Malcolm Broussard. Honorary pallbearers will be Russell Bernard, Herbert Mashaw, Don Boulley, Ryan Valure, Steven Carpenter, David Carpenter, and Ryan McCaig.A Rosary will be prayed by Brother Francis Fontenot, BCC on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at 7:00 PM in Martin & Castille Funeral Home in Lafayette.The family requests that visitation be observed on Tuesday from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM and on Wednesday from 7:30 AM until time of services.Ms. Bernard always had a great love for children, therefore her wishes were that donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.The family would like to give special thanks to the nurses, the nurse's aides and the staff of Evangeline Oaks Guest House and also Southern Care Hospice, for their kindness and gentle care given to Ms. Lula during her time of need.
