The Life of Marian Knight

Marian Odom Knight passed away February 23, 2009 while living at Ivy Hall Assisted Living in Alpharetta, GA, where her son John Knight resides.

Marian was born September 12, 1918 and grew up in Oakdale, La. She attended SLI (UL Lafayette) in the mid 30''s paying her way through school by working in the various jobs on campus. She received an honorary degree from UL (SLI) in the late 80''s.
She married Leo R. Knight in Oakdale, LA in 1939 & settled in Lafayette in 1943. Together they started Knight''s Hardware & Appliances, later to become Knight''s Furniture.

Marian was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lafayette since 1943. She was very active in her community and was recognized for over 25 year''s service with the Pink Ladies at Lafayette General Hospital. She was active in the Krewe of Attakapas Carnival Organization, The Order of the Troubadours of the Lafayette Town House & the Daughters of the American Revolution. She loved to travel & to cook for her family & friends.

Marian loved her Arabian horses & was active in the Arabian horse business from the 1960''s to the mid 1980''s. She was involved as an exhibitor where she rode in English & Western Pleasure classes in a number of Arabian Horse Shows in Texas & Louisiana. Marian & her husband Leo owned the 1968 Arabian National Champion Park Horse & bred two other National Champion Park Horses.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother & great grandmother and a real friend to her family. She will be truly missed by all.

Survivors include one son John R. Knight & his wife Eileen Lagroue Knight of Alpharetta GA. Three grand children, John R. Knight Jr. and his wife Cara of Dunwoody, Ga, Susie Knight Phillips & her husband Kevin of Mooresville, N.C., Scott Leo Knight of New York City & five great grand children Alison Nash Phillips, Kevin Phillips, Jr , John R. Knight III, David S. Knight & Sadie Eileen Knight. She is survived by her brother Dr. James C. Odom & his wife Tolley Davis Odom of Lafayette along with numerous nieces & nephews. The family wishes to thank a very special person, her long time nurse, and friend for the last four years Pearl Frier for her devoted & loving care.
She was preceded in death by her husband Leo R Knight, mother Katie Nash Odom, father W. A. Odom Sr of Oakdale, her brothers W.A. Odom Jr of Crowley, LA, and Troy J. Odom of New Orleans, LA.

Funeral services will be held at Delhomme''s Funeral Home Lafayette, LA. Visitation will be on Saturday, February 28th at 10:00 am until the service which will be held at the Delhomme Chapel at 12 noon. Burial will be at the Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery, Pinhook Road Lafayette, LA. The Reverend Perry Sanders a long time family friend and retired Pastor of First Baptist Church of Lafayette, La. will conduct the services.

Pallbearers will be John R. Knight, Jr., Scott Leo Knight, Michael Odom, Dr. John Floyd, Stuart Breaux and Ray Sutton, Jr.

Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive, Lafayette, is in charge of all funeral arrangements.
