The Life of Ronald Wayne Cox

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 14, 2009 in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Ronald Wayne Cox, 80, who passed away on February 12, 2009 at 12:15 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center. Reverend Noah Langley will conduct the funeral services. Interment will take place in Holy Mary, Mother of God Cemetery. Mr. Cox, a resident of Broussard, was the son of the late Sidney Cox of Gunnersville, Alabama and the former Joel Hardaway of Haynesville, Louisiana. He is survived by one daughter and her husband, Kelly Cox Wilkins and Stephen; two sons and their wives, Robert and Mary Lynn Cox and Mike and Desiree Huggins; one brother and his wife, Bobby and Brenda Cox; and six grandchildren, Bryan, Michael and Alex Wilkins, and Whitney, Hillary and Robert Cox, II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Fern Belaire Cox; his parents, Sidney and Joel Cox of Henderson, Texas; and his siblings, Sidney Cox, Ralph Cox and Margaret Nanny. The family requests that visiting hours be observed on Saturday from 12:00 pm until time of service at Delhomme Funeral Home of Lafayette. Pallbearers will be Robert Cox, II, Michael Wilkins, Keith Belaire, Mike Alesi, Odis Wilder, Whitney Cox, Hillary Cox and Alex Wilkins. Honorary pallbearers will be Ed Lyons, MD, his niece, Kathleen Cox, his nephews, Stephen Nanny and Tommy Stoker. Known throughout East Texas from Henderson to Kilgore Junior College to Baylor University as “Spider” and became known as the East Texas Spider Man. He was a proud graduate of Baylor University, but not so proud of their many years as a football team! Mr. Cox was a three sport All-American, lettering all 4 years in high school in: Football, Basketball and Track. Wayne retired from Union Texas Petroleum, Inc. and was the Senior Landman at that company going on to become an independent landman and right away agent for several years. He served as President of the Louisiana Petroleum Landman’s Association from 1972 – 1073. Wayne was a staunch patriot and supported numerous national and local patriotic organizations and was instrumental along with Hall Lyons and Rod Miller in the formation of the Republican Party of Lafayette Parish. He was a consistent subpar golfer in his playing years and he and his wife, Fern, enjoyed may rounds of golf in local and distant state courses. Together they enjoyed many fishing excursions. The family would like to thank the following people for their care of Wayne in times of his greatest need: At Our Lady of Lourdes: Fr. Ambrose and Rev. Walt Dunbar, Sr. Nira Ledoux and Sr. Eileen Rowe. Becky Benoit, RN, Comfort Care Nurse and Nurse Rika, RN of 4th East; Fr. Miller of Christ the King Catholic Church, for his special blessing; Mr. and Mrs. Odis Wilder, for their visits and friendship dating back to high school; and Dr. Ed Lyons, MD for his excellent care and friendship for more than 20 years. Wayne also held a very special place in his heart for Piper Leger and for her very enjoyable visits. Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive, Lafayette, is in charge of funeral arrangements.
