The Life of Evelyn Ruth Chastant

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 21, 2007 at a 9:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial in La Chapelle de Martin & Castille for Evelyn Ruth Chastant, 82, who passed away peacefully on Monday, November 19, 2007 at her residence in Lafayette surrounded by her family. Interment will be in Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery.Reverend Monsignor Harry E. Benefiel will be the Celebrant of the funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Concelebrant will be Reverend Floyd J. Calais. Patti Updike Darbonne, organist, will play for the services, "How Great Thou Art", "Amazing Grace", "Ave Maria", and "On Eagles'' Wings". Giftbearers will be Caroline Chastant and Rebecca Chastant. Eulogists will be Harold P. "Sonny" Chastant, Jr.,and Paige D''Amore.Mrs. Chastant died peacefully at home after and extended illness. She is survived by her beloved husband of sixty-one years, Dr. Harold P. Chastant; five children Harold Chastant, Jr. of Crowley, Mallory Paige D''Amore of Greenwood, SC., Bobby Chastant, DDS of New Iberia, Bradley Chastant, MD of Lafayette, and Paul Chastant II of Baton Rouge. Survivors also include sixteen grandchildren (9 boys and 7 girls), and four great grandchildren. Mrs. Chastant was raised in Morgan City. Following high school, she completed Charity Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans and later attended USL. Throughout her life, she has volunteered for many community services. Some include, Louisiana Heart Association, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Medical Auxiliary, where she served as President in 1962, Ridgewood Homemakers, where she served as President in 1979, and Hospice of Acadiana. Mrs. Chastant was a charter member of the Krewe of Attakapas and a member of the International Good Neighbor Council. She was a Lady of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in 1989 and an Honoree at Bishops Charity Ball in 1997. Mrs. Chastant spent her free time enjoying sewing, motorhoming, and volunteering, but her primary role in life was being caretaker of all around and staying at her husband''s side, loving and assisting and caring for him. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to all and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Pallbearers will be Harold Chastant, Jr., Bobby Chastant, DDS, Bradley Chastant, MD, Paul Chastant II, Ralph D''Amore, MD and Bradley Chastant, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons.A Rosary will be prayed on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at 7:00 PM in Martin & Castille Funeral Home in Lafayette.The family requests that visitation be observed on Tuesday from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM and on Wednesday from 8:00 AM until time of services. The family would like to give special thanks to her doctor''s, her husband Dr. Harold P. Chastant and her son Dr. Bradley Chastant, her faithful assistant for over 25 years, Helen Redd, the staff and nurses of Hospice of Acadiana, especially Donna Vidrine, her "Birthday Group", and all of her neighbors, family and friends, who called, visited often, and prayed.
