The Life of James Allen Miller

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, July 15, 2010 at First Baptist Church of Lafayette for James A. Miller, 57, who passed away on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at his residence after a short battle with cancer. Dr. Steve Horn, Pastor of First Baptist Church of Lafayette, will conduct the funeral services. Musical selections will be provided by Luther Burney, Lindsay Fite, Karen and Lauren Lang and Sharon Ringo. Burial will take place in Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery. A native of San Antonio, TX, and a resident of Lafayette for 31 years, Jimbo was employed by Maverick Directional Drilling Services of Spring, TX for many years as well as at the time of his death. He worked in the oil industry for over 36 years and was known as "Griz" by most in the oil field. A gentle giant of a man, Jimbo was always willing to lend a helping hand, be it digging a hole, refinishing furniture, or baking one of his famous cakes. He also enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing, and anything else he could do to spend quality time with his family and friends. He was also a long time member of First Baptist Church of Lafayette. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jane Moncrief Miller; two sons, James "Matt" Miller and his wife Megan and Robert "Keno" Miller, all of Lafayette. He is also survived by an uncle, Roy Jenkins of San Antonio, TX, an aunt, Jane Jenkins of Allen, TX, numerous loved ones, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eldridge "Babe" Miller and the former Laura Jenkins, as well as his only brother, Robert "Bobby" Miller. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home of Lafayette on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm and will resume at The First Baptist Church of Lafayette on Thursday from 11:00 am until the time of services. Memorial contributions can be made in Mr. Miller's name to Heart of Hospice, 201 West Vermilion Street, Lafayette, LA, 70501. Pallbearers will be Jeff Moncrief, Jimmy Fuller, Jack McNiel, Uriah McNeil, Greg Decker, Sam Brown, Myles Martin and G.W. Rudick II. Honorary pallbearers will be Rick Jones, Larry McNeil, Jim Frank and Charles Ochello. Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive, Lafayette, is in charge of funeral arrangements.
