The Life of Gerald Eugene Segura

Gerald "Gene" Segura, 77, died peacefully Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at home surrounded by his family after a brief illness.Gene is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jeanette B. Segura; five daughters, Kim (Bill) Parson, Kay (Gary) Arnold, Kerry (Ronnie) Grant, Karen (Bill) McGovern and Kristine Lindsey; and one son, Kevin (Karen) Segura.  Gene is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Jason and Jeffery Parson and Sissy Parsons (Kelly) Scholl, Jennifer and Jonathan Arnold, Amber and Austin Grant, Patrick and Garret McGovern, Michele, Kalli Rose and Jace Preston Segura, and Brandon and Megan Lindsey; two step grandchildren, Blake and Gracey Domingue; and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, Preston and Irene S. Segura; his brother, Johnny and sister-in-law, Belin Segura; and his sister, Joy S. Frick.Born October 31, 1931 in Iberia Parish, Gene graduated from New Iberia High School, where he was a state champion boxer.  He went on to win many Golden Glove Championships and was offered boxing scholarships to college, but found his calling in the oilfield.  In 1954, Gene married Jeanette Broussard.  He worked for Patterson Rental Tools and Tuboscope for many years and in 1972 moved his young family to Lafayette.  In 1986, he and Jeanette formed GES Services, Inc., where he worked until his retirement in 2000, turning the business over to his son, Kevin.Gene was a parishioner of Holy Cross Catholic Church and was a member of the Petroleum Club of Lafayette, where he served on the board of directors.  An accomplished golfer and tennis player, Gene was also a member of Ellendale Country Club in Houma, LA and Oakbourne Country Club, and Squirrel Run.  Gene was a member of API, Friends of the Poor and Knights of Columbus.  In addition, Gene served in the Louisiana National Guard for nearly twenty years, achieving the rank of Sergeant.Friends and family will remember Gene as a fun loving, gentle man who loved to entertain, especially his grandchildren.  No one could tell a story with such passion and color like Gene.  Words alone cannot describe the love and faith Gene Segura had and shared and he will be greatly missed.A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at 11:00 AM in Holy Cross Catholic Church in Lafayette.  Reverend Floyd J. Calais will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services.  Giftbearers will be Jeanette Scholl, Megan Lindsey and Jennifer Arnold.  Lectors will be Bill Parsons and Karen McGovern.  Jodi Bollich, organist and soloist, will sing "On Eagles'' Wings", "Amazing Grace", "Ave Maria" and "The Lord Is My Shepherd" for the services.  Entombment will take place in Lafayette Memorial Park.Pallbearers will be his son, Kevin; son-in-laws, Bill Parson, Gary Arnold, Ronnie Grant and Bill McGovern; and his dear friend, Charles "Bubba" Carlin.Honorary Pallbearers will be Dailey Berard, Max Menard, Buddy Trammel, Rick Hayes, Tom Dimmick and Bob Morris.The family would like to express their thanks to Hospice of Acadiana for their love and attention given to Gene and his family during this trying time.Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Acadiana, 200 Johnston St., Suite 200, Lafayette, LA 70503 or at their website www.HospiceAcadiana.com.A Rosary will be prayed Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at 7:00 PM in Martin & Castille Funeral Home.
