The Life of Homer Delph Solanas

Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, February 7, 2006 at a 2:00 PM Mass in St. Mary, Mother of the Church Catholic Church for Homer Delph Solanas, age 85, who departed his life, Saturday, February 4, 2006 at 5:50 PM in Lafayette, after suffering the devastating effects of Alzheimer''s disease "the long good-bye" for over a decade. Homer is now at peace.The Reverend Robie Robichaux, JCL, Pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church will conduct the services.Born in New Orleans, Louisiana on February 25, 1920, Homer was the son of Claude H. Solanas and Suzette Delph Solanas.  He attended public schools in New Orleans and earned a Bachelor of Engineering Degree at Tulane University.  His first full-time job was working for the Navy as a Structural Inspector at the United States Naval Drydocks in Morgan City, Louisiana.  There Homer met his wife, Gussie, who was also working for the Navy at the Shipyard.  They married in 1944, moved to Lafayette, where home has been ever since.Homer worked for Mayfair Industries as Chief Engineer for many years.  When de decided to do consulting work, he returned to college and earned a Masters of Science Degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana.  As a Consultant, Homer worked with architects and other engineers on many public buildings throughout Louisiana.  He was a quiet man who was devoted to his wife, his children and his home. He enjoyed growing tropical plants, traveling and dancing.  Homer was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Community, Louisiana Society of Engineers, AARP, Woodmen of the World, Krewe of Zeus and Gloria Mundi Travel Club.Survivors include one daughter, Sandra S. Ellender and her husband, Ross of Lafayette; one son, Ramon Ray Solanas and his wife, Eva of Corpus Christi, Texas; four grandchildren, Eric and Jaron Ellender of Lafayette and Kristen Solanas and Nicole Solanas of Austin, Texas.  He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty one years, Gussie Broussard Solanas, who recently passed away on December 7, 2005; his parents, Claude and Suzette Solanas, and one brother, Donald W. Solanas.The family wishes to thank their friends and the church community for all prayers and support throughout this long illness.
