The Life of Dr. Edgar Paul Breaux Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Lafayette for Dr. Edgar Paul Breaux, Jr., who passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 22, 2007 at his residence. Reverend Keith J. DeRouen, Pastor of Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, will be Celebrant of the Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Concelebrants will be Reverend Michael Russo, Reverend Cyprien Eze, Reverend Monsignor Harry Benefiel, Reverend Chester Arceneaux, Reverend Richard Wagner, Very Reverend Monsignor J. Douglas Courville, JCL, Reverend Floyd J. Calais, and Reverend Lloyd F. Benoit. Interment will take place in Lafayette Memorial Park. Edgar was born May 30, 1917 in Napoleonville, Louisiana. He was the fifth of eight children of Edgar P. and Annie Adolph Breaux. He graduated Valedictorian from Napoleonville High School at age fifteen. He then attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge where he graduated with honors receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. Edgar then attended LSU Medical School in New Orleans where he received his medical degree in 1940. After completing a one-year Internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Edgar was commissioned as a Captain in the 64th General Hospital Unit in the United States Army where he served as a battalion surgeon for the 16th Field Artillery Battalion in North Africa and on the Anzio beachhead in Italy. Edgar returned from WWII to complete a General Surgery Residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. In 1948 he married the love of his life, Kathryn Ann Flynn, and moved to Lafayette to begin his medical practice. He was a founding member of the Lafayette Medical and Surgical Group, later known as the Hamilton Medical Group. His surgical practice spanned a total of fifty years ministering to thousands of patients in the Acadiana area. He was loved by all: patients, hospital staff, and colleagues for his wonderful bedside manner, easy-going personality, and clinical expertise. He served as President of the Lafayette Parish Medical Society, Louisiana Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, Chairman of the Board of the Hamilton Group, and Board Member of Lafayette General Hospital. He also served as Clinical Professor of Surgery for the LSU Medical Center at Charity Hospital in Lafayette, instructing young surgeons in the art of General Surgery. Edgar was a long-time member of the Lafayette Rotary Club, charter member of the Lafayette Serra Club in 1963, and member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a founding member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, and member of The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre. He was an enthusiastic member of Lafayette Crime Stoppers, and Oakbourne Country Club, where he was a charter member and avid golfer and tennis player. Survivors include three sons, Michael J. Breaux, Dr. E. Paul Breaux, III and his wife, Carolyn, and Dr. Edward Flynn Breaux and his wife, Roxanne; three daughters, Ann Clark and her husband, Stuart, Mary Breaux Jones of Shreveport, and Kathleen Broussard and her husband, Bradley, all of Lafayette; nineteen grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Breaux, Michael Joseph Breaux, Jr., Dr. Jason Anthony Breaux, Dr. Jennifer Breaux Pugliese, Alison Clair Breaux, Emily Elizabeth Breaux, Kathryn Clark Sintz, Elizabeth Curran Clark, Stuart Gaither Clark, V, Christopher Peavy Breaux, Edward Flynn Breaux, Jr., Lauren Elize Breaux, William Edgar Breaux, Taylor Edgar Jones, Nicholas Gene Jones, Kathryn Claire Jones, Caroline Kelly Broussard, Andrew Charles Broussard, Matthew Joseph Broussard; and two great grandchildren, Madeline Marie and Anna Claire Breaux. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of fifty-eight years, Kathryn Flynn Breaux; his parents, Edgar Paul and Annie Adolph Breaux; four sisters, Inez, Anna Louise, Lucille, and Alma; three brothers, Ray, Charles, and Rodney; one granddaughter, Mary Kathryn Broussard and a loyal friend, Alfreda Williams Dugas. The family requests that visiting hours be observed on Tuesday from 3:00 pm until 9:00 pm and continue Wednesday from 8:00 am until time of service. A private rosary will be recited by the family prior to visiting hours. Pallbearers will be Michael Joseph Breaux, Jr., Dr. Jason Anthony Breaux, Stuart Gaither Clark, V, Christopher Peavy Breaux, Edward Flynn Breaux, Taylor Edgar Jones, Nicholas Gene Jones, Andrew Charles Broussard, and William Edgar Breaux. Honorary pallbearers will be Mr. Stuart Clark, Mr. Bradley Broussard, Mr. Hubert “Red” Dumesnil, Mr. Paul Hilliard, Dr. Zerben Bienvenu, Dr. Harold Jacobs, Dr. James Odom, Dr. Harold Chastant, Dr. Charles Boustany, Dr. John Straub, Mr. Robert Lowe, Mr. Jerry Ard, Mr. Nicholas Sintz, and Mr. Craig Pugliese. The family would like to thank Mrs. Margaret Gary, Laura and Lee Roy Lawrence, Mrs. Dorothy Portlock, Ms. Louella Cormier and the physicians, Dr. Morris Hoffpauir and Dr. Harold Chastant, and the nurses and staff of Hospice of Acadiana for providing unending love, care and comfort.
