The Life of Jessie Burns Foss

Jessie Burns Levy Foss, born July 7, 1923 in New Orleans, passed away on March 3, 2008 in Lafayette. She was 84. Jessie Foss grew up in New Orleans and lived most of her adult life in Lafayette. She graduated from high school at St. Joseph''s Academy, and then trained at Touro Infirmary to become a Registered Nurse. She served as a United States Army nurse in World War II at New Caledonia and Saipan and left the service with the rank of first lieutenant. In 1949, she wed Arthur Wade Foss, Jr. After they moved to Lafayette in 1950, she worked as a surgical nurse at Lafayette Sanitarium, an OB-GYN nurse for Dr. Stanley Morgan, and operating room supervisor at Lafayette General Medical Center. For some years after, she scrubbed as a surgical nurse part-time. In 1989-1990, she served as commander of local VFW Post 2103. She had many passions including bourree, duplicate bridge, Tiger Woods, Frank Sinatra, researching her great-grandfather, Albert Moses Levy, who served as a surgeon in the Texas Revolution, and her membership in First Assembly of God Church. Her mother, Jessie Burns Levy and her father, Lewis Harris Levy, M.D. preceded her in death, as did her brother, Lewis Fisher Levy and a nephew, John Costley. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Arthur Wade Foss, Jr. and three daughters, Linda Catherine Foss of Lafayette and her sons, Samuel and Andrew Foss-Grant; Nancy Elizabeth Foss of Austin, Texas; and Sally Foss Colocho and Enrico Poggio of Athens, Alabama and their children, Andres Colocho and Francesca Poggio. She is also survived by her sister, Mildred and her husband, Scotney George, and their children, Anita Schayot and Joseph Caleyo and their families. She is also survived by her niece, Lillian (Noopy) Levy Dykes, her nephew, Lewis Johnnis Levy, and her sister-in-law, Wilhelmina Foss Lawley and their families. Jessie''s family is very appreciative of the care offered by Hospice of Acadiana and Cornerstone South, and the attention offered this last year by her friends Helen Plaskett, Ruth Williams, and Aisha Parzivand. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston Street, Suite 200, Lafayette, Louisiana 70503. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at 11:00 am in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers. Reverend Jeffery Schmid, Associate Pastor of First Assembly of God Church, will conduct the funeral services. Interment will be held in Lafayette Memorial Park. Visiting hours will be observed on Tuesday from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm and will continue on Wednesday from 9:00 am until time of service. Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive, Lafayette, is in charge of all funeral arrangements.
