The Life of David G Hellwig

David G. Hellwig, 70, of Mertztown, passed away suddenly on Thursday, October 5, 2017 in his residence. He was the husband of Delores A. “Tootie” (Miller) Hellwig, whom he married on March 16, 1968.

Born in Allentown, David was a son of the late George Hellwig, Jr., and A. Marie (Swartzentruber) Hellwig. David was a member of Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, Mertztown, and was a 1964 graduate of Brandywine Heights High School, Topton. After graduation, David enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served on a nuclear submarine during the Vietnam War. David worked for Pennsylvania Power and Light (PP&L), Allentown, for 37 years, first as a Lineman, and later as a Foreman, retiring in 2006. A proud veteran, David was a member and past Commander of Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion Honor Guard, Topton, a member of the Reading Submarine Veterans, and was also the head of Kapps 4 Kids, a veteran organization that donated hats to children in need. David was the “Mayor” of the Village of Shamrock, and was a member of the “Longswamp Mafia.” He was also a member of the Longswamp Township Historical Society and enjoyed hunting and farming.

In addition to his Wife of 49 years, “Tootie”, David is survived by his 2 Daughters, Connie L. (Hellwig), wife of Lawrence J. “Larry” Falatko, Mertztown, and Susan J. (Hellwig), wife of Deron M. Stiff, Alburtis. He is also survived by a Sister, Virginia M. Hellwig, Macungie, and a Brother, William P., husband of Coleen M. (Whitney) Hellwig, Kutztown.

A funeral service to celebrate David’s life will be held on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at 11:00 AM in Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, 50 Luther Drive, Mertztown, with Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Sassaman, officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by his fellow Honor Guard members of Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion, Topton, will follow in Longswamp Union Cemetery, Mertztown. Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing on Tuesday morning from 9:00 to 11:00 AM in the church.

The family requests that contributions be made in David’s memory to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 117, Mertztown, PA  19539-0117. Arrangements are by the Ludwick Funeral Home, Topton, PA.
