The Life of Dr. Carl Anthony Gumpert Sr.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at St. Jules Catholic Church for Dr. Carl A. Gumpert, Sr., 94, who passed away on July 11, 2017 in Lafayette, LA.

Fr. Daniel Edwards, Pastor of St. Jules Catholic Church, will be Celebrant of the Mass and will conduct the funeral service.

Burial will take place in Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery.

Dr. Carl A. Gumpert, Sr. was born April 21, 1923 in Houston, TX. He was the youngest son of the late George and Gertrude Gumpert and brother to George P. Gumpert. The family moved to New Orleans when he was 8. In the fall of 1941, Dr. Gumpert started college at LSU and was in the ROTC program. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in the fall of 1942 and was training as an aircraft mechanic. He attended Officer training and was trained as a Navigator on B-17 and B-29 Bombers. After World War II he was trained as a Jet Pilot and flew F-86 Saber Jets. He left active service to return to college in 1952, while remaining active in the US Air Force Reserve until retiring at the rank of LtCol. He completed undergraduate and Dental School at Loyola University in New Orleans. Dr. Gumpert and his bride, Louella, of 60 years were married on June 4, 1955. After graduating Dental School in 1958; the couple moved to Lafayette to begin their family while he built a successful Dental practice. Dr. Gumpert was instrumental in developing a Clef Pallet team in Lafayette to help patients who needed that specialty in the local area. After 40 years practicing Dr. Gumpert retired; but began working with the Lafayette Community Care Clinic supervising the training of young Dental Hygienists until his final retirement in 2013. He was active as a Cubmaster for Pack 440, Troop Committee member for Troop 19, a member of VFW Post 69, a reader at St. Jules Catholic Church and a school supporter at Cathedral Carmel, St. Thomas More and Lafayette High School.

He was the proud father to Carl, Jr., Paul, John, Kris and Elizabeth. He took great pride in his grandchildren, Mary, Michael, Kristopher, Brandon, Thomas, Matthew, Victoria and Payton; step grandchildren, Erica and Christopher Kessel and Lane, Aaron and Taylor Mitchell. Dr. Gumpert was known as “Big PawPaw” to his great grandchildren, Christian, Olivia, Ava and Stella.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louella P. Gumpert; parents; and one brother, George P. Gumpert.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home - Bertrand on Friday, July 14, 2017 from 5:00 pm until 8:00pm. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00pm on Friday evening in the funeral home. Visiting hours will continue on Saturday from 8:00am until the time of service.
