Early in life, Nelson was a man of all trades, from a welder to a bread man. At age 28, Nelson committed himself to obtain a higher education. He then graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a degree in Marketing from the School of Business. He continued to return to the college to share his story, which stressed the capability of the individual to will the life that they imagine. He owned and managed his Shelter Insurance agency for 25 years, from which his clients became lifelong friends. He was a Lifetime member of the Realtor Association of Acadiana Honor Society and was awarded as the Affiliate of Year in 2000. He became a Louisiana Notary Public in 2015 by passing a difficult exam of which only 5% of the applicants are successful. He was invited to participate in the FBI Citizen’s academy from longtime friend Troy Chenevert. Nelson was a Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree member, and served on the Parish Council for Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Nelson had an infectious love for life. He loved large gatherings with family and friends, always looking for an excuse to entertain and “throw down in the kitchen”. He was passionate about all things outdoors. From his father, he inherited the gene for hunting down the elusive Sac-A-Lait of the Atchafalaya Basin. He continued this tradition by taking his own boys to the family camp of Pecan Island for fishing, crabbing and shrimping.

He treasured travel and new experiences, from Boy Scout camping with son Nick across the country, golfing, motorcycling with his friend Brad Duplantis in the Blue Ridge and Ozark mountains, and especially the precious time with his family on their vacations to tropical destinations.

His life was greatly impacted by the A.C.T.S. retreat in October 2013. He acquired a renewed faith and a new family. He subsequently served as a team member for A.C.T.S. for the following 3 years.

Nelson was a consummate business man, a lifelong seeker of knowledge and understanding, and lastly, a dedicated servant to God, his family and his community.
