The Life of Sylvia Bell

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, May 1, 2017 at 10 a.m. at Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist for Sylvia Hebert Bell, 94, who passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2017.

Interment will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park.

The Very Reverend Chester C. Arceneaux, VF, Pastor of Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, will officiate at the Funeral Mass. Evan McCarthy, her great grandson, will be the altar server. Scriptures will be read by her good friends, Paul and Judy Hebert. The gift bearers will be her great-grandchildren, Paul Catalanatto, Jr. and Annie and Owen McCarthy. Pallbearers will be Stephen Cramer, Paul Catalanatto, John McCarthy, Paul Hebert, Kevin Hebert, Eric Rabalais and Luke Hebert.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Katherine Bell and her husband Stephen Cramer of Cypress, Texas and Mary Lou Jumonville of Lafayette; two granddaughters, Lisa Catalanatto and her husband, Paul of Baton Rouge and Jennifer McCarthy and her husband, John of Houston; four great-grandchildren, Evan, Annie and Owen McCarthy, and Paul Catalanatto, Jr. She was preceded in death by her husband, George O. Bell, her son, Richard A. Bell and her parents, Amus and Eda Hebert.

Ms. Bell was a native of Scott and a long-time resident of Lafayette. She retired in 1990 after 30 years of service as manager in the Lafayette Diocesan School Lunch Program. Prior to that, she worked at Franklin''s Dress Shoppe and Heymann''s. She was active in her church, serving as a volunteer for the Cathedral Office and Gift Shop. In 2003, she was awarded the Bishop''s Medal and honored as Parishioner of the Year for St. John''s.

Sylvia was always known as an organizer and one who gave of her time in service to others. Friends will remember the many years of annual high school reunions which she kept alive through phone calls and newsletters.

Visitation will be held at Martin and Castille Funeral Home''s DOWNTOWN location on Sunday, April 30, 2017 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a French Rosary at 6 p.m. The funeral home will reopen at 8 a.m. on Monday, May 1, 2017 until service time.
