The Life of Florine Sides
LAFAYETTE - Florine Stewart Sides
passed away at her home in Lafayette on Monday, April 11, 2017. She was 96.
Following a private family service, internment was at Lafayette Memorial Park
Mausoleum.
A native of Montesuma, Georgia, Flo Sides was born June 9, 1920 and graduated
from Albany High School in 1939. When World War II broke out, Flo helped make
parachutes at a South Georgia manufacturing plant in Albany. She met Bob Sides
there when he was stationed at Turner Air Force Base and they were married at
the First Baptist Church of Albany. Shortly after, Bob was stationed in India.
Bob, Flo and their two sons, Kenny and Larry, were in Tokyo and Texas following
the war.
After a career in retail sales and as a small business owner in New Orleans
until their retirement, she and Bob moved to Lafayette in 1986. Flo was active
in the Eastern Star. She was also a volunteer with the Salvation Army and gift
shop volunteer with Lafayette General Medical Center (LGMC) as a Pink Lady for
over 20 years. In 2004 Flo was honored as Pink Lady of the Year by LGMC.
She is survived by her son Larry Sides and his wife Kathy Ashworth, and her
grandson Luke Ashworth-Sides, all of Lafayette.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Nelson "Bob" Sides;
father Etheridge Stewart; her mother Minnie Lee Luker Stewart; her sisters
Odell Stewart Duke, Trell Stewart and Evelyn Stewart Rounsley; her brothers
Charles Stewart, Etheridge (Jr.) Stewart and Emmett Stewart; and her son Marine
Lance Corporal Charles Kenneth Sides, who died during military service in
Vietnam.
