The Life of Joan Barbara Harrop

Joan Barbara (Huston) Harrop, 86, of passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 6, 2017, in Kutztown Manor Nursing Home, Kutztown.

Born in Portland, ME, she was a daughter of the late Robert D. and Ethel I. (Lancey) Huston.  Joan was a 1949 graduate of Deering High School, Portland. In 1953, she received a Bachelor's Degree in sociology from University of Maine, Orono, ME, where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Mrs. Harrop worked in Hartford, CT in the administrative office of Connecticut General Life Insurance Company, before she was married. She lived with her family in Rosemont, along Philadelphia's main-line and later in Westport, CT, where she was active with the Westport Women's Club and Westport Historical Society. After her children graduated high school, Joan relocated to Portsmouth, NH, where she worked as a restaurant hostess and tour guide for group bus trips throughout New England. She subsequently lived in the Atlanta, GA, area and worked in the gift shop at Stone Mountain Park, and in Richmond, VA, where she worked at the local food bank. Upon her retirement, she relocated to Wilmington, DE, where she lived for several years before finally moving to Berks County. Joan loved being around and helping people. For many years, she was an active member of the American Association of University Women, and particularly loved working on the annual fundraiser collecting and selling used books. While she lived in Wilmington, she volunteered at the Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children where she was recognized for her service. The family would like to thank the staff at Kutztown Manor for their loving care, support and friendship while she was a resident.

She is survived by Sons, Robert D., husband of Kathleen L. (Lynn) Harrop, Sinking Spring; Jeffrey W. husband of Judy J. (Loeffler) Harrop, Beachwood, NJ and Kenneth E., husband of Jennifer L. (Givens) Harrop, Potomac Falls, VA. There are also 5 Grandchildren, Jennifer, Jake, Matthew, Shannon and Colin Harrop. Joan is also survived by the father of her children, Warren R. Harrop.

Services are private at the convenience of the family.
