The Life of John Michael Kalin

John Michael “Mike” Kalin, 74, of Kutztown, passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 in his residence, surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Betty Lou (George) Kalin. They were married on June 28, 2008, after having been together for over 20 years.

Born in Pottstown, Mike was the only child to the late John and Helene T. (Yerger) Kalin. He was a Catholic in faith, and was a graduate of Reading Central Catholic High School. Mike was a proud United States Marine Corps veteran, who honorably and faithfully served his country in the Vietnam War. He was employed as a bus driver by Carl R. Bieber Tourways, Kutztown, for 18 years, retiring in 2009. Prior to that, he worked as a truck driver. Mike was a long-time member, and currently served as Secretary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 839, Kutztown, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 560, Kutztown, Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion, Topton, Catholic War Veterans and The Mercantile Club, Emmaus, and several other organizations. Mike enjoyed playing solitaire on his computer, hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He was an avid gun collector and target shooter, who taught his wife, children and grandchildren how to shoot. Mike also was a NASCAR fan and was especially fond of "The King", Richard Petty. After his retirement, Mike and his wife, Betty Lou, enjoyed traveling and taking road trips all around the United States.

In addition to his Wife, Betty Lou, Mike is survived by his Children, Michael E., husband of Deanne F. (Street) Kalin, Middlebury, PA, and April L. (Kalin), wife of Brian K. Garrett, Fleetwood; 2 Step-Children, Joseph D., husband of Jennifer M. (Valanski) Moyer, Blandon, and Marlin L., husband of Patricia M. (Casino) Moyer, Kutztown. He is also survived by 9 Grandchildren, Angela, Derik, Paige, Austin, Joey, Patrick, Bridget, Jason and Ashley; and 5 Great-Grandchildren.

Graveside services, and inurnment with military honors provided by Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion Honor Guard and the United States Marine Corps will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 11:00 AM in the Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion, Garden of Honor, 133 Centre Avenue, Topton. There are no calling hours.

The family requests contributions be made in Mike's memory to the American Cancer Society, 498 E Bellevue Ave, Reading, PA 19605. Arrangements are by the Ludwick Funeral Home, Kutztown, PA.
