The Life of Harvey Joseph Firestone

On Tuesday afternoon October 25, 2016, God called His Faithful Servant Harvey J. "Joe" Firestone Home. Graveside Services were held on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery.

Harvey J. Firestone, or "Joe" as many knew him, was born in Roanoke, Louisiana to L.J. Firestone and Vena Virginia Peters Firestone. He was a military Veteran and compelled by his Patriotic duty, enlisted in the United States Army, after the on-set of the Korean War. Mr. Firestone served as a medic for 3 years and was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington State, where he treated returning soldier from the war, eventually earning the rank of Sergeant First Class (E7) and Medical Platoon Sergeant.

In 1963 he was hired at USL (now ULL) as a Professor in the General Business College and was admired by many of his students even after retiring in the 1990''s. Mr. Firestone was passionate about flowers, began growing Orchids and in 1965 purchased a greenhouse. For decades he was a Member of the Acadiana Orchid Society and attended Orchid Shows around the Country winning many awards. He made numerous orchid hybrids and was awarded for them as well. Mr. Firestone was also showcased on the 1997 front cover of the Lafayette Les Bons Jours Newspaper, with an article titled: “Beautiful Orchids by Joe Firestone”! He enjoyed planting flower beds throughout his yard.

Throughout his life he remained a humble man, a gentle man, and a devout Christian. In 1963 he joined Asbury United Methodist Church, was a member of the Church choir and remained there for over 40 years. He was also an active member of the Cicero group as well as the “Faithful Friends” Sunday school class. Mr. Firestone had many friends throughout his life, and cherished his time with his family. He was a patient parent and encouraged his children throughout their lives. He will be dearly missed by all.
