The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille''s DOWNTOWN location on Sunday from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM and on Monday from 8:00 AM until time of service.

The family would like to give special thanks to Lula’s long-time friends, Linda Sharpe, Rosalyn Charles and Judy Placer. She received many visits and phone calls from special people in her life. Thank you all for the loving presence and attention you gave our mom.
Lula recounted as one of her earliest memories from the age of five her Dad driving the school bus, returning from his rounds with books for her to enjoy. Sunday, following the same route, people would wait for the bus for a ride to church. All were invited to dinner. In addition to teaching her own children, her mom also taught the neighbors’ kids their prayers and catechism in French. Lula remembered finishing her homework by kerosene lamp on the floor of her parents’ bedroom.

From this formative background the life we celebrate unfolded. She remained a devout Catholic, devoted in prayer to Mary, St. Anthony, St. Jude and St. Michael. She received her degree from “Southwestern Louisiana Institute” and started her career in 1943, teaching in Iota. Many of Lula’s former students will remember her also from Mt. Carmel of Lafayette, St. Ignatius of Grand Coteau, Judice Elementary, Father Teurlings, Lafayette Elementary and finally, Our Lady of Fatima from which she retired in 1990.

She was less social than she was prone to friendships and community. The center of our home was the kitchen where simple meatballs and brown gravy could rise to the level of divinity, gumbo was a special occasion, the observation of Lent meant shrimp stew or fried fish Fridays. She loved to cook and she loved her family - three exclamation points punctuated her written expression of the latter. She was an avid reader. Crosswords and Jumbles from her two newspaper subscriptions helped her to retain the mental sharpness she never lost. Her “internet” was the Lafayette Public Library and to those in the broadcast media who did not hear from Lula personally, the “s” in Plaquemines is not pronounced.

Lula was a friend to all who knew her and they knew her as an example of strength and courage. Her children live in gratitude for their mother’s loving presence in their lives.
