The Life of Dr. Arthur Newell McCallum

A Funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at 10:00 AM in Martin & Castille''s La Fleur de Lis Chapel in Lafayette for Dr. Arthur Newell McCallum, age 77, who passed away peacefully on Monday, August 29, 2016 at Lafayette General Medical Center.

Interment will be in Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pastor Stephen D. Schwing, of Lafayette''s First Apostolic Church will be officiating the service.

Dr. McCallum is survived by his wife, Jodie; his dog, Pepito "Peppy" McCallum; his son Michael and his wife, Monette; his daughter Angela and her husband, John Brister; and his daughter Jennifer and her husband, Geb Bull. He is also survived by his three stepchildren, Laura, Molly, and Jack Truxillo; his two grandchildren, Jordan and Caroline; his great grandson, John; and by his older brother, Ben and his wife, Sally.

Arthur Newell McCallum was born the son of Henry and Frances McCallum on January 11, 1939 in Bastrop, Texas and spent his early childhood years in Corpus Christi, Texas. His family later moved to Tyler, Texas where he formed dear and long lasting friendships and graduated from Tyler High School, Class of 1957. Newell was a gifted and talented athlete, known especially for his prowess on the football field and was awarded an athletic scholarship to Southern Methodist University. After graduating from SMU, Newell came to Louisiana and obtained his medical degree from Tulane School of Medicine, Class of 1966. He completed his pediatric residency at Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas then went on to serve in the United States Air Force as Chief of Pediatrics, stationed at NATO Izmir, Turkey during the Vietnam War. After his service in the military, Dr. McCallum obtained a pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship from University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. He then moved to Lafayette in 1973 to begin his pediatric practice and retired in February of 2010 after 37 years of practice. He truly loved being "Dr. Mac" and was totally dedicated to his patients and their families. Dr. McCallum loved people and took an interest in everyone. He enjoyed all of life and was especially fond of gardening, going to church and learning the Word of God, and being loved by his family, his friends, and his dogs.

Serving as pallbearers are his friends, Jesse Broughton, Wes Broughton, Kipp Fontenot, and Kenneth Richard; his brother-in-law Karl Leger; and his son-in-law Geb Bull.

Honorary Pallbearers are Newell''s Tyler High Razzer buddies, Joe McMahan, Jeff Heller, Harold Carter, James Culver, James Gulledge, Gerry Murrell, Lonnie Halbert, Jack Stringer, Earl Davis, Woody Roark, and Neal Findley.

The family would like to express their heartfelt kudos to the excellent 7th Floor Nursing staff of Lafayette General Hospital for their top-notch care, as well as to all of Dr. McCallum''s physicians who have kept our cowboy in the saddle all these years. The family is also grateful to Dr. Morris Hoffpauir and the dedicated nurses of Hospice of Acadiana for their wonderful service to our community. You are a true blessing to us all.

The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille''s SOUTHSIDE location on Friday, September 2, 2016 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

In tribute to the legacy of Dr. McCallum, donations can be made in his name to the rebuilding of his church, The First Apostolic Church of Lafayette, which was devastated in the August flood. The mailing address is 717 Duhon Road, Lafayette, LA 70506.
