The Life of Mildred Broussard

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00PM on Friday, May 20, 2016 in Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Mildred "Millie" Barrilleaux Broussard, 96, who passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at 5:10 PM on Sunday, May 15, 2016.

Interment will be in Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery.

Reverend Howard Blessing, Pastor of Holy Cross Catholic Church will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and conduct the Burial Service.

A native of Abbeville and a former resident of New Orleans, Millie has lived in Lafayette since 1962. She was the daughter of Abel Augustin Barrilleaux and Regina Broussard Barrilleaux, residents of Abbeville. Millie graduated from Mount Carmel High School in 1937. In October of 1940, she was selected Queen of the Columbus Parade in Abbeville. After attending Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute (Now The University of Louisiana at Lafayette), she was employed as a telephone operator with Southern Bell.

Following the outbreak of WWII, Southern Bell transferred her to Camp Claiborne. There, she was reacquainted with 2nd Lt. Don Louis Broussard, a recently commissioned officer in the Army Corps of Engineers. They married in Alexandria, LA on July 20, 1943. After a year of service at Camp Sutton, Monroe, NC, her husband''s engineer regiment was ordered to the European Theater of Operations.

While her husband was overseas, she lived with her mother and worked for the Abbeville Meridional. After her husband''s separation from service in early 1946, they moved to New Orleans and he was employed by Shell Oil Company. When her husband was recalled to active duty in November 1950 she returned to Abbeville. Following his return from active duty and resuming his employment with Shell, they built a home in Metairie. They resided there until relocation to Lafayette in 1962. During her residence in Metairie, she was a member of the Green Acres Garden Club and won several awards for flower arrangements.

Survivors include her beloved husband, Don Louis Broussard; her daughter, Susan Broussard Pellerin; her granddaughter and husband, Laura "Lori" LaHaye Broussard and John C. Broussard and her great grand-children, Kailey, Cole and Connor Broussard.

Millie enjoyed cooking delicious home cooked meals every Sunday. She loved her family and friends whole heartedly. She was caring and kindhearted to animals, birds and wildlife. Loved by all who knew her, Millie was a very special person and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Everyone that met Millie fell in love with her. She never had an unkind word to say about anyone.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Abel Barrilleaux and Regina Broussard Barrilleaux.

The family offers special thanks to her primary caregiver, Lynette August and to her other loving caregivers, Dorothy Rubin, Rondall Gumbs and Loretta Blanchard. Special thanks to the staff of Hospice of Acadiana, especially Debra Cormier and Dr. Hoffpauir.

The family request visiting hours be observed on Friday, May 20, 2016 from 9:00AM until time of service.
