JoAnn, daughter of the late RT Cornish and the former Janice Enez Tullos, was born in Tullos, Louisiana on September 26, 1936 and was a resident of Lafayette most of her adult life. The daughter of a wildcatter in the oilfield, she attended 11 schools in 12 years throughout Louisiana and Texas. She was a 1955 graduate of Lafayette High School where she was the Student Body President and was a Majorette.

She met the love of her life “Poochie”, in high school, and they later married while attending SLI (Southwestern Louisiana Institute), now UL Lafayette. Unknown to many, she was a true entrepreneur. While selling Avon cosmetics, she became one of Lafayette’s youngest saleswomen. She broke sales records and won many prizes, which allowed her to buy her very own first car, that memorable turquoise Metropolitan. That was why she loved turquoise so.

As her young family grew, she began to teach swimming lessons to her children and neighbors. This venture grew throughout the years resulting in JoAnn teaching half of Lafayette how to swim. Her legacy of “Swimming Is Fun” continues through the efforts of her children and grandchildren.

Her children began swimming competitively and with her entrepreneurial spirit, she supplied the area teams with Lycra racing suits out of the back of her station wagon. JoAnn and Poochies’ dream came true when they opened the doors of “JoAnn Delhomme’s Get Wet Shop” on Jefferson Street in the late 70’s. A second shop opened later where the current store is located on Ambassador Caffery Parkway run by her daughter and granddaughters. JoAnn was an amazing businesswoman who had a beautiful smile that inspired those around her.

JoAnn did everything for her children, whom she loved dearly, and was always so proud of their accomplishments. She was a devoted wife, understanding mother of eight, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, mother-in-law and a proud grandmother who cherished her grandchildren. MeMe did it all for them. She was one of those "left handers" that made her an artist, musician, and seamstress (costumes, tailoring, and home accents).

We will miss you Mom, Big Grandma, MeMe, JoAnn, and Aunt Jo. Your love for life, religious teachings, and devotion to Jesus Christ will continue because you taught us well. So through us, your adoring and loving family, we will continue to instill your legacy.
