The Life of Verna Mae Wimberly

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial in La Chapelle de Martin & Castille for Verna Mae Comeaux Wimberly, 95, who died on Friday, March 25, 2016 at her residence in Lafayette surrounded by her family.

Interment will be in Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery.

Reverend Daniel Edwards, Pastor of St. Jules Catholic Church in Lafayette, will be the Celebrant of the funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Musical selections will be, "Ave Maria", "When The Saints Go Marching In" and "The Lord''s Prayer". Her son Michael has lovingly chosen and will perform "Dream" and "Amazing Grace".

She leaves to cherish her memory, five daughters, Avanel Mingo and her husband, Jim of Lafayette, LA, Maureen Wimberly of Eugene, OR, Christine Bampton and her husband, Ross of Bend, OR, Patricia Wimberly of Denver, CO, and Elaine Bernhard and her husband, Kenny of Lafayette, LA; two sons, Michael Wimberly and his wife, Vera of Morgan City, LA, and Paul Wimberly and his wife, Michelle of Lafayette, LA; one sister, Helen Comeaux Gravois and her husband, Earl of Napoleonville, LA; nineteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one sister-in-law, Joan Comeaux; numerous nieces and nephews; and her dear friend, Joe Domas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Wimberly, II; her son, George Wimberly, III; one sister, Irene Comeaux Canada; two brothers-in-law, Charles "Rusty" Canada and Ben Wimberly; one brother, Paul "Clyde" Comeaux; and her parents, Laurent Andrew and Lelia Marie Morvant Comeaux.

Verna was a native and lifelong resident of Lafayette, Louisiana. She received her Master''s degree in Education from USL (now ULL), and began her career teaching special education with the Lafayette Parish School Board. Mrs. Wimberly enjoyed accompanying her husband throughout his extensive musical career, traveling and spending time with family and friends. She was affectionately know as "Mommié", "Grandmother" and "Honey" by her grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Kenny Bernhard, Jim Mingo, Ken Bernhard, Adam Bernhard, Seth Bernhard, and George Allen Wimberly, IV. Honorary pallbearers will be Scott Guilbeaux, Zachary Hillman, Rhett Wimberly, and Joshua Wimberly.

A Rosary will be recited on Monday, March 28, 2016 at 7:00 PM in Martin & Castille''s DOWNTOWN Location.

The family requests that visitation be observed on Monday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and will continue on Tuesday from 8:00 AM until time of services.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Madeline Patin for her support, as well as many caregivers including, Brenda Dugas, Deidra Hypolite, Regina Gabriel, Rose Roussell, Goldie Moses, Odelia Williams, Selina Ellis, Greta Kelly and Jolane Doucet with Hospice of Acadiana. The family will be eternally grateful for their kindness, compassion, and gentle care given to Mrs. Wimberly during her time of need.
