The Life of John Milton Pepper

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, February 20, at 1:30 p.m. at the Delhomme Funeral Home Chapel of the Flowers, 1011 Bertrand Drive, Lafayette, to celebrate the life of JOHN MILTON PEPPER, 82, who died on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at Lafayette General Hospital.

Reverend Thomas Voorhies, Pastor of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Scott, will be the Celebrant of the funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services.

The family requests that visitation be observed on Thursday, February 19 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and on Friday from 9:00 AM until time of services. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM on Thursday evening. Mr. Pepper will be laid to rest in Lafayette Memorial Park.

Milton leaves behind his devoted wife of 63 years, Wilda Hebert; three children, Brenda Leonpacher, and her husband Randall; Deborah Fontenot, and her husband Russell; and Keith Louis Pepper and his wife, Robin; one brother, James Pepper; nine grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Fred Allen Pepper; his parents, Louis Pepper and Lula Bouillion Pepper LeBlanc; and one sister, Joyce Pepper Barrios.

Milton was born in Duson, Louisiana and was a resident of Scott at the time of his death, after living many years in Lafayette. He served in the US Naval Reserves from 1951 – 1988, was a member of the City of Lafayette Fire Department from 1960 – 1980, serving as Chief of the Fire Prevention Bureau at the time of his retirement. He then founded Pepper Fire & Safety, which he operated until 1992 when it was merged into S & S Fire and Safety, where he continued to work until last summer.

President of the Bago Cajun Camping Group, and a member of the Pelican Winnies, a chapter of the Winnebago-Itasca Traveling Club, he and his wife, Wilda, enjoyed traveling in their Winnebago and spending time with friends made through these groups. They visited all 50 states, driving to all except one. Milton was Asst. Scout Leader of Boy Scout Troup 19 during the years his sons were involved in scouts. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He will be missed by many.
