The Life of Lilla Irene Melancon
Irene U. Melancon, long time resident of Lafayette with the last 6 years being at Eastridge Assistant Living in Abbeville. She was a kind hearted woman who always provided for her family. She enjoyed her pets, reading, cooking, embroidering and especially gardening. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother who was lovingly referred to as "Honey"
95 years old, she was born March 15, 1919 in Sun Flower County, Mississippi. Daughter of J. B. Underwood and Lilla Cox of Greenwood, Mississippi.
She traveled extensively, living in Bogata, Columbia and many other cities in the United States with her husband as his job required. They settled down in Lafayette in the early 60''s to call it home. She worked most of her life in Lafayette, in ladies fine clothing department stores, 17 years at The Fair, also at Dillards and Sears.
She was married in 1941. Beloved wife of “Frenchie” Napolean A. Melancon (deceased) originally from Youngsville. They had two children. She is survived by a daughter Betty M. Guidry married to Louis Guidry with 6 grand children and 6 greats. Also survived by a son Richard A Melancon married to LaNell B. Melancon with two grandchildren and 3 greats. One sister, Louise Corbett of Diamondhead.
She will be sadly missed by all that knew her.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 with a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial, in Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers in Lafayette on Bertrand Drive. Reverend Gary Schexnayder will officiate the service.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed on Monday, February 9th at Delhomme Funeral Home on Bertrand from 5:00 PM until 8:00 pm and from 8:00 am until the time of the service on Tuesday. A Rosary being recited at 6:30 pm on Monday.
Entombment will be in Lafayette Memorial Park.
