The Life of Henry Rose Carter

1852-1925 Born in Caroline County Virginia, Henry Rose Carter graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in civil engineering. He studied medicine and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1879. He had a lifelong interest in epidemiology. Dr. Carter spent years in the deep south and eventually Cuba researching the cause of yellow fever. Although Walter Reed is credited with the discovery of the connection of mosquitoes to yellow fever, Dr. Reed said of Henry Rose Carter: “I know of no one more competent to pass judgment on all that pertains to the subject of yellow fever. You must not forget that your own work in Mississippi did more to impress me with the importance of an intermediate host in yellow fever than everything else put together.”
