The Life of William Sherman Flores Sr.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 24, 2014 at 1:00 p.m., at Grace Presbyterian Church (518 Roselawn Blvd. Lafayette, LA. 70503) for William Sherman Flores, Sr., age 87, who passed early Wednesday morning. Bill Flores was born on January 10, 1927 to Roy and Dorothy Flores in Mansfield, Louisiana. After a robust and bountiful rural childhood, upon his 18th birthday, Bill joined the US Navy to serve on the USS Wasp, Essex Class Aircraft Carrier in the middle of WWII serving primarily in the Pacific theater and later transporting troops home from Europe. After his Navy service, Bill attended Louisiana State University receiving a B.S. in Geology and moved to Shreveport, Louisiana to start his career, initially with Arkla Fuel Company as a Petroleum Geologist. In 1954, Arkla transferred Bill, now married to Jane Caldwell, to Lafayette, Louisiana to participate in the Gulf Coast Oil boom of the 1950''s and was a Lafayette resident for almost 60 years. Once settled in Lafayette, Bill left Arkla to work for other oil companies like Buffalo Oil and Worth Exploration before becoming an independent Petroleum Geologist in the late 1960''s. After a successful run of discoveries and developments of oil and gas properties in the 1970''s and 1980''s, Bill was able to provide his family with a wonderful life of prosperity filled with travel, education and fellowship that was his greatest happiness. As his children we are forever grateful and inspired by his leadership. Starting in the late 1980''s now Papa Bill, due to grandpa status, focused more on relationships than business, although he "still did a little prospecting on the side.” His days were filled by hunting most of each duck season for the past 30 years, coastal fishing trips, golfing with his Oakbourne Country Club pals, Petroleum Club lunches, Mardi Gras participation with the Krewe of Gabriel, LSU football or always being a super Dad and friend to his children, grandchildren, family and friends. We will miss his warm smile, gentle nature and his optimism that has been such a beacon to us all. Rest peacefully Papa Bill.

Survivors include, one sister, Letty L. Burns of Shreveport, Louisiana; one daughter, Catherine F. Hubert and her spouse, Thierry of Boston, Massachusetts; three sons, William S.
