The Life of Dorothy McCool

Dorothy Irene M'Cool (Koury)

December 21, 1927 - February 18, 2014

Dorothy Irene M'Cool beloved mother of Carol, Thomas (Lyudmyla), Virginia and Jennifer (Dave) passed peacefully on February 18, 2014 with her daughter Carol in CO.  Dorothy was born to Maude (Reed) M'Cool and Norris V. M'Cool, a Philadelphia businessman, and grew up in East Lansdowne, PA, a Philadelphia suburb.  Dorothy's family was always the center of her life.  Before passing, she blessed all of her grandchildren, including, Kaitlin, Alex, Andrew, Roger, Jessica, Laura, Bobby and Matthew and her great grandson Gavin, by traveling across the United States and spending precious moments with all.

Unusual for women of her day, Dorothy graduated from Temple University, Philadelphia earning a Bachelors Degree in Home Economics.  After which she shared her wealth of knowledge teaching inner city Philadelphia middle school children.

While studying at Temple University, she met her husband, Dr. Thomas Leo Koury with whom she was married for 37 years.  During their marriage, she supported and encouraged him as he achieved a degree in Dentistry at Swarthmore University, PA as well as, when he continued his education at Kansas City, Kansas, to become a renowned surgeon in Maxilla Facial Plastic Surgery.  As he became well-known for specializing in birth defects and hand surgery, Dorothy worked tirelessly with him in his office to build and expand his practice in the Washington, DC area.  She was always an asset in the medical community as well as the Washington, DC community, volunteering her time and expertise as Treasurer and President of the Montgomery County, MD Ladies Medical Auxiliary.  She achieved this in tandem with taking beautiful care of her four children and home where she used her education everyday.

Dorothy also compassionately volunteered her artistic talents and creative fundraising  in the Washington, DC area with numerous embassies and religious organizations, benefiting children around the world.  She used this to encourage her family to learn and appreciate other cultures and people.  She enjoyed traveling the world with both her husband and children and also, visiting her friends and relatives.

Dorothy instilled beauty and a love of flowers in her family and friends.  She enjoyed participating in the Potomac Chrysanthemum Society, in  the Silver Spring, MD Garden Club and in flower arranging competitions for Ikebana and the Garden Club.  She exhibited her arrangements in the Washington, DC Botanical Gardens and won numerous awards.  Her passion for roses, chrysanthemums and beautiful gardens lives on at each of her children's homes.

Shortly before Dorothy passed, she wished all of her children a wonderful life, and stated, "I have lived a beautiful life."

To My Cousins, I remember your mother as a very sophisticated lady with always a kind word to all of us cousins. She particularly made me feel grown up even though I was young. I also remember the beautiful Easter eggs and crisp Christmas $1.00 bills that Uncle Tommy used to give out to all of us kids (20 or so) at her behest, they were a real treat. God Bless you all, Bob and I will keep you in our prayers. Cousin Dina
