Rev. Samuel Hall Tryens, 91, of Granite Farms Estates, a United Methodist clergyman, died Oct. 12 at the medical facility of Granite Farms Estates.

Born in West Chester, he was formerly of Aston and Bethel townships. He graduated from Temple University and the Temple School of Theology.

Rev. Tryens was employed at the former Sun Ship Co. for 10 years.

He served in the Army Air Corps for 31/2 years and was a chaplain's assistant. Rev. Tryens was a member of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church.

He was appointed to five churches during his active ministry, the longest being 20 years at Siloam United Methodist Church in Bethel, from which he retired in 1978. Upon retirement, he accepted short-term appointments at Landenberg, Eddystone and Lima churches.

Rev. Tryens was also associate pastor at Elam United Methodist Church for five years. He served on several boards in the local Methodist District of 50 churches and enjoyed teaching at the Pocono and Haverford Youth Institute.

Gardening and nature were his interests, and he also loved animals and birds. His wife, Helen Fridy Tryens, died Oct. 10. He was father of the late Mark H. Tryens. He also was brother of the late Fred, Norris and David "Pete" Tryens and Mary Birkmire.

Survivors: Sister, Betty J. Crowther of Lima brother, Joseph A. Tryens of California.

Service: 10:30 a.m. today, at the same time as his wife's funeral, Elam United Methodist Church, 1073 Smithbridge Road, Glen Mills.

Visitation: 9:30 a.m. today at the church.

Burial: Elam Cemetery, Glen Mills.
