The Life of GERTRUDE KELLEY GORDON

Buried with her mother, Annie Kenworthy, is pioneering Pittsburgh journalist, Gertrude (Kelley) Gordon - one of the first women in this city to receive her own byline in print. Her reputation as fearless was well-earned, given the lengths she would go to get a story. She once ascended 2,250 in a balloon and in 1919 took a ride in an airplane during the early days of aviation. She famously stepped into a lion's den, climbing into the cage with the King of the Jungle while covering the Hippodrome in 1909. Gordon interviewed many notable people including Amelia Earhart, Babe Ruth, Mary Pickford, Teddy Roosevelt, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Honus Wagner. She is remembered with a scholarship awarded by the Women's Press Club of Pittsburgh, named in her honor.
