The Life of ARTHUR BLISS SHEETS

Arthur Bliss (A.B.) Sheets was born January 11, 1875, to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sheets in Dunbar, PA., a town outside Connellsville in the heart of the Connellsville Coke Basin. The Sheets family, which included five children, later moved to Fairchance. In 1889 at age 14, A.B. came to Pittsburgh and found work as a bank messenger. By 1900 he was the bookkeeper for J.H. Hillman & Son Co. and that same year he married Ada Lentz, J.H. Hillman, Sr.'s secretary. The had one daughter, Katherine. A handsome and fastidious man whose hair turned silver gray as he grew older, A.B. supervised the coal and coke brokerage business as well as the accounting department. Intelligent and level-headed, he was particularly admired for his uncanny ability to spot an error in an accounting report. With Hillman customers A.B. enjoyed a reputation for being honest and dependable. If he told a customer he would have 10 cars of coke on Monday morning, the coke would be there. Outside the office, A.B.'s interests were baseball and the theater. Every Saturday night Mr. and Mrs. Sheets could be found in the first row of the Nixon Theater. A.B. retired in February 1945 at the age of 70. By then he was ill, his health having declined, particularly after breaking his leg in 1935. He died at home on January 23, 1946, survived by his wife and daughter. Along with serving as a director and officer of other Hillman subsidiaries, Sheets was a director of the A.M. Byers Company and the Peoples-Pittsburgh Trust Company. He held memberships at the Duquesne Club and Longue Vue Country Club. pill online
