The Life of JEFFERY SCAIFE

The Scaifes had settled in Pittsburgh at the beginning of the 19th century, and were primarily manufacturers and fabricators of metal sheet and plate. The original enterprise was founded in Pittsburgh in 1802 by Jeffrey Scaife and continued as a family business for well over a century as William B. Scaife & Sons Co., and later as the Scaife Company. The Scaifes were related to the Mellons through the marriage of Sarah, daughter of Richard Beatty and Jennie King Mellon, to Alan Scaife in 1927. The Sarah Mellon Scaife Foundation has been a major benefactor of the city, as have been other Scaife family foundations. Three of the family have been Corporators.
