The Life of Wilson S. Rybolt

Wilson S. Rybolt (1845-1939) was the last of the soldiers of “The Grand Army of the Republic” (Civil War 1861-1865) in this part of the country. He was a teamster at one of the battles of the Wilderness in the State of Virginia. He lived in Withamsville and was 94 at his death. “It was a beautiful, clear, cloudless day. The air was warm and filled with the fragrant scent of flowers and new mown grass. As we gathered reverently on that final resting place a great silence descended on all who were there for we realized that we were witnessing the end of an era of history. As we were standing at the gravesite we heard the sound of an approaching airplane. We recognized it as Doctor Sidney Scorse in his piper cub airplane, who lived in Amelia, Ohio. He was coming to pay honor to Mr. Rybolt. The plane descended lower and lower over the resting site. As we were looking up, the Doctor dropped a beautiful bouquet of red roses from the plane that fell near the grave. The roses were picked up and placed on the “Star Spangled Banner” that was draped on his casket, as a tribute to the old soldier’s memory. Then when all became silent again, the haunting sounds of the bugle drifted “Taps” as a last salute of “farewell”. Mt. Moriah Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow
